Home content setup with QNAP or cheaper option

Hi,

I am trying to set up a home content networked system to have a unified place for all my media content from laptops, desktops, portable drives and dozen of pen drives that i don't even remember where they are now.

I am thinking to get a Qnap 2-bay NAS, with the usb port support I can hook it up to some of my portable drive but overall the media content will be copied onto Qnap internal drives.

Then I have a problem, I can't work out how to play those media file ranges from mkv, rmvb, mp4, mp3, jpeg etc onto my Sony TV.

Currently I have my TV, iptv, pioneer blueray player linked to my billion modem/router using ehternet cable, and there is only 1 ethernet port left to be connected to QNAP NAS i assume.

Can someone help me decide a media player that is capable to play range of media files that i have and to work out which is a better setup for streaming HD files onto my Sony TV?

I looked at the mediacenter, microserver option but I think it's too advance for me. I basically just need something plug-and-play.

thanks in advance.

  • forgot to mention, I would also like to be able to browse some content on the ipad as well.

  • Get a gigabit switch, problems solved also make sure the Qnap does have an Itunes server.

My setup is Seagate Black Armor 4 bay nas, sony tv hx820, netgear n600 router, linksys gig switch. Works with android apple windows etc, although i do have an apple tv 2 for the apple throw to tv.

Nas was 199 + Hdd, for the sony tv i actually use my tablet and throw to TV using bubble upnp.

An easier way is to use windows 7 (using a wireless network) right click send to TV

  • thanks. will check out the model you mention.

  • so how does you play mkv and rmvb files onto the TV store in the NAS?

    • The tablet decodes it using mx player or other media players
