Whats Going on with TP-Link: KASA V Tapo

I've got a few Kasa smart plugs, been pretty happy with them. Was gonna order another but seems like no one has stock. But there is plenty of stock for Tapo which is apparently the new TP-Link brand?
Looks like they are incompatible. I cant add Tapo devices to the Kasa app?
TP-Link stated in a article last year they are committed to both brands but its not really looking like that is the case?
Or at least Kasa is a lot more popular and they are struggling with manufacturing like everyone else.

I guess my question is, Are the continuing Kasa? Cause I mean, if I've gotta change my app and upgrade my kit, Im not gonna go with the brand who EOL'ed my equipment just for a rebrand.

The consensus on the TP-Link forums is that the Kasa devices are getting harder to source — at least in the UK.

You can still buy the slightly more expensive KASA power boards though, from Bunnings. https://www.bunnings.com.au/tp-link-3-outlets-2-usb-kasa-sma…

  • I use both Kasa and Tapo smart switches. The dual product lines is super annoying. There's hope that TP-Link will release a single app that will control both Kasa and Tapo devices. Currently they have separate apps. Yet, when I changed the password on the Kasa app it also changed the password on the Tapo app so they're linked server side. TP-Link says that they won't discontinue Kasa (apparently). The key differences I've noticed are a) Kasa won't let you share devices, you have to give someone your login. With Tapo you can share control of devices, you just enter their email address in share devices, b) Kasa smart switches with energy monitoring only shows limited information, whereas the Tapo app shows daily power consumption, and c) Kasa has more devices available in their product line than Tapo. If you have an iPhone download the free Watt app. It extracts the same energy monitoring data from the Kasa and Tapo devices to show you daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly power data. The TP-Link apps aren't as informative.

  • I didn't need another Kasa (with energy monitoring) plug in the last Amazon deal in June - then two weeks later I need one and can't find one for a decent price. So I have gone with a Tapo TP110 for $21.60 on ebay (there was a discount applied). @Eatslikeacat mentioned the Watt app in a previous post and it works well with Kasa, so i'm looking forward to running the Tapo in it too. Unless I am missing something the Watt app doesn't appear to allow scheduling - that still has to be done on the native Kasa app (and I assume Tapo app too?)……

    • That's right. The Watt app doesn't do scheduling. That is still done through the Kasa or Tapo app. The Watt app has a useful feature where you can set the on and off button to become a slider. The Kasa and Tapo app are too trigger happy and can accidentally click on and off.

  • Hi all,

TP-Link are working on integration of Kasa products to the Tapo app. Hopefully by late this year.

FYI, all but the Kasa KP303 Power Board are EOL with the Tapo range being the suite of products moving forward.

    Cheers

    • I only buy Tapo smart plugs now. The Kasa ones are hard to find in stock and cost more. The Tapo smart switches have the same maximum load specs and allow device sharing.

    • Hey, do you know if there are still plans to add Kasa devices to the Tapo app?

  • Yeah i've been trying to get a multicoloured Kasa smart bulb for like a year now but everywhere was OOS, just relented and got a Tapo one instead.

It's a mind boggling marketing move, but both lines are reasonably priced and seem to perform well.

  • I also read somewhere that the Kasa runs the schedule "locally" while the Tapo doesn't and relies on internet connection to do so. So I went with Kasa thinking they would be more dependable.

Not sure if this is actually correct because my experience with Kasa plugs have not been smooth sailing.
