Advice Please - Suitable Splitter to Extend Laptop to Display on 2 Monitors

Hi,

I would kindly appreciate some advice to ensure I'm buying the correct product to do the job I want.

I currently have a work desktop computer connected to two monitors, unfortunately my computer is a low spec potato and work has seen fit to replace the desktop with a slightly less potato laptop which comes with a postage stamp sized screen.

The end state is I'd like to maintain the same sort of setup I currently have using 2 independent (extended?) screens and not use the small laptop screen at all.

I've looked at HDMI splitters on Amazon but I can't be certain if these are going to only 'mirror' the screens rather than extending them like I currently have.

My laptop has only one HDMI port and the two monitors I'll be using each have a HDMI port.

My preferred place to purchase would be either Amazon or eBay.

If anyone could point and/or link me to the right piece of kit I need that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

all the splitter would do is take one signal and then output that same signal to 2 screens which would be duplicates.

What is the model of your laptop and what ports exist on the sides of the laptop?

Helps if you mention what laptop it is to look up it's ports and external display compatibility. You might just need a cheap and cheerful dock.

  • Hi Hybroid, the laptop is a Dell Latitude 3520

You have a Type-C™ port with DisplayPort Alt mode. So you need a cable with USB-C on one end, and DP on the other end

Or grab a USB dock that supports DisplayPort / HDMI

Your other monitor can be connected via HDMI.

Looks like it does have DisplayPort over USB-C according to the pic here:

In which case, that's easy. A USB-C dock with dual HDMI will work fine.

      • Laptop USB-C ———> USB-C dock with dual HDMI ——-> Connecting via HDMI to each monitor?

        As simple as that?

          As simple as that!

          • @Hybroid: Awesome, I would have completely bought the wrong thing. lol

Thank you, I appreciate the help you have given me.

  • How many video ports does the potato powered laptop have? What I/F are they?

  • 1 xHDMI 1.4a port and 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 with PowerShare according to the specs I've found online.
