New InstantGAS Hot Water System

Hi,

My hot water system broke down last week and it was 135 lt tank system.
Now time to replace, so I am reaching out to get some feedback whether to replace water tank systmen or go with Instant Gas hot water system.

Never had instant hot water system before and are they better than water tank system?
If so could someone recomend some models (instant hot water) that you had expereince and not recomment some models if you had some issue with that company or model.

The gas plumber are so busy that they need atleast 4 weeks to get back to me for any sort of instalation and I thougt in menatime i can do some groundwork on what models out there suits my budget.

Thanks.

Before deciding on gas instant, check yours gas supply around the house, you'll find that it will need 19mm gas pipe to work properly and if you need that bit upgraded it will be very costly, not short off the much better heat pump system. Rinnai infinity 26 is pretty much the golden standard for instant gas.

    • Cheers, just spoke to the plumber and yes i already have gas heater, gast cook top and that might require bigger gas pipe line.
Yes it can be costly affair.
The plumber also recommended Rinnai instant B20 model instaled and removal of old one will cost me $1800.

Wow, the B20 has gone up in price. Got quoted $1200 about 18 months ago to remove and replace our gas hot water system

        • Like evrything appliances are going u too……

      • the b20 is the cheaper version of the infinity series, $1800 seems excessive.

They're better in that the instant gas hot water never runs out of hot water. Uses 6 times more gas to heat water but does not use any gas to keep the water at temperature. Rinnai 26 will work for up to 2 bathrooms. Needs the larger diameter gas pipe as comment above and an electric outlet near the unit (which you probably already have for the tank). Water temperature controller costs additional but lets you set the temperature of the water so you do not need to use the cold water tap for showers.

  • 4 weeks without hot water?

    • Not really, i have a leak at the tank and it's leaking 24/7……and leak gets anny bigger chance the water can put off pilot and then no hot water.

        OK…

        To answer your question.

If you're on stumps or can easily upgrade the size of your pipes, go for instant. I recommend Rinnai.

If not just stick with gas storage- I recommend Aquamax stainless steel.

It takes a lot of energy to heat up water as fast as you can use it, like when you are showering. Electricity can't deliver that much energy that quickly. Gas can. So if you go electric for water heating it has to be a system that heats the water as fast as it can, and stores it for when you need it. And all the while it is storing it heat is leaking out and being wasted, and electricity is needed to keep the stored water hot. Gas can deliver that much heat fast enough to heat the water as you need it. So you can choose a storage or an instant system. An instant system is smaller, cheaper, and uses less gas because it doesn't have to keep the stored water hot until you want to use it.

But these days new houses are going all electric. They are being required to by governments. Because electricity can be obtained from green sources, whereas gas always requires burning a hydrocarbon, which releases CO2 into the atmosphere. And gas is becoming more and more expensive. Gas is what they burn as the last choice to generate electricity because its so expensive.

Think seriously about electric. Either an electric storage system, or if you can afford the higher upfront cost of a heap pump system that will have lower running costs.

Also depends on your use case.

If you regularly need short burst of hot water, stay with a tank setup imho. As instant gas won't heat up the water quick enough, as there is no preheated water tank.

If you typically need hot water for longer duration (e.g. shower), then instant gas is an option to consider.

Don't get any new gas system. Gas is only getting more expensive. Get a heat pump hot water system.

You not worng…..was just looking at heat pump options but still getting my head around how it works!!

It works the same as a refrigerator or an air conditioner. They are heat pumps. And where electricity can directly create 1 kW of heat using 1 kW of electricity, it can pump up to 3 kW of heat using 1 kW of electricity.

I'd NEVER have an instant gas HWS again. The amount of cold water that gets wasted at the taps waiting for warm to hot water to flow out is ridiculous. This applies to hand washing, my washing machine and my dishwasher.
It's a luxury when I visit friends who have a storage HWS (gas, solar or electric) to turn on a tap and hot water flows out immediately!

I have Rinnai instant with temp options for bathroom/kitchen. The water temp 38 for shower is constant (don't have to fiddle with adding cold/hot and temp in Kitchen 55 for washing up. (Switch in both rooms to change over and up/down in increments of 1deg for personal pref) I wash in cold water and dishwasher also starts cold. Gas bill for cooking/hot water is around $75 in Winter and $55 in summer.
My next bill might not be so forgiving after reading posts on here lately!

    • I have the Rinnai 26 without the adjustable temperature controller. Would be nice to have one in the shower for sure 😊
