Low-key would rather get from Amazon because of their returns policies.

Had one of these cheapies before and found it too heavy and clunky for repetitive use. For the occasional hobby use, should do fine

Anyone serious, get yourself Klein Tools wire stripper

    • I'd also recommend something like the Weidmuller Stripax over these generic spring type strippers. Can be had for about $100 but it is a professional tool that lasts a lifetime. I still have one from the early 90's.

they are a different tool. The ones advertised here are auto adjusting - supposedly just removes the plastic sheath and not any wire strands. These look pretty much identical to the visegrip branded wire strippers which are # 1 on amazon. I suspect that visegrip get such high reviews because those in the US are pretty passionate about their own brands. I was researching this type of wire stripper before this post came up.

Me too, it's great and only a bit more compared to this generic brand. This newer wire stripper design is available everywhere now, but cheaper ones tend to feel a bit flimsy and wobbly. Also Irwin's grip feels much better.

One thing not so good with these grip type wire strippers is if the wires are greasy and oily, the grips won't have a good grip and the wires will slip. Have to make sure you wipe off all the oil and grease from the wires first.

          • @edfoo: Thanks for the tip. Had some slippage problems last year with an similar autobarn sourced wire stripper.

  • Hey rep, can you do a deal on rivet nut kit?

Anyone know if these work alright for stripping ethernet cable?

    • I have a similar wire stripper (https://www.bunnings.com.au/irwin-vise-grip-200mm-self-adjus…) which works fine for ethernet cable.

    • Better to use a punchdown tool, even those yellow disposable ones.

      • I still occasionally use my yellow disposable one from 20 years ago.. it goes missing from time to time but always pops back up amongst my tools. I have Klien tools for networking but sometimes the cheap disposable option is more accessible.

goes missing from time to time

those things are absolute proof of the paranormal.

    • Can’t vouch for this brand - but the Irwin ViseGrips strip outer sheath quite well, however about 1 in 5 would knick the inner strand sheath down to copper (Used in a hotel fit-out stripping smart switches for a few months)
