Google Nest Wi-Fi Poor Performance with TV and PC

Hi all,

I’ve got a google nest wifi at home (Hub + 3 points).

I have 1gb down speed with Aussie Broadband

The performance I see on my phone is super quick.

However, the speed on our laptop PC’s and our TV is poor. We generally uses these devices in the room where the main hub is located.

For example, Kayo on the TV (QN800B Samsung TV) constantly buffers and goes in/out of focus.

A secondary tv using google chrome performs even worse.

I tried to prioritise these devices via Google Home app, but it hasn’t made a difference.

I suspect google nest wifi is the culprit and I’ve read others having similar issues.

Should I cut my losses and get another mesh system?

Any suggestions?

  • If you want to take advantage of that speed over wifi, you need a different router/modem. I think Google Nest's speed is quite slow compared to other routers even from the same generations.

Depending on your house setup, you can get a very cheap and good option for your setup with a Xiaomi Router for under $100. https://www.amazon.com.au/Xiaomi-AX3000-Wireless-Router-3000… You can get 2 or more to set them up in a mesh if you want.

    • The frustrating this is I am getting good speed on my phone (speed test shows 400 down and 50 up)

Whilst I agree google nest isn’t fastest speed, I still should be fast enough so that there isn’t lag/buffer on Kayo and chrome cast.

With Xiaomi; is it tin foil hat stuff about where the information flows from their devices?

    • Unless the TV has wifi 6 capabilities, I don't think the Google Nest Wifi will hold it back. I have been using the Nest 2ifi mesh for years with zero issues. We are limited to NBN FTTN at 45Mbps though. The nest wifi is pretty fool proof, but I would check that the DNS settings are set to ISP or test out a few custom ones. What is the actual problem? Have you got speedtests from the PC and TV vs phone?

    • I disagree.

Nest WiFi supports up to WiFi 5 (802.11ac). Which supports speeds up to 6933Mbps. Aussie BB promises typical evening speeds of 600Mbps (note a whole zero missing). Even if Aussie BB provided the full 1000Mbps as the NBN name suggests, the WiFi will be more than capable of handling that. So the WiFi is not the bottleneck here.

Besides OP shouldn't be having streaming issues even on much slower WiFi. Even when i was on NBN 100/20 i was streaming 4k fine.

      • Let's agree to disagree.

From the horses's mouth: https://support.google.com/fiber/answer/6250056?hl=en#zippy=… Nest Wifi tops at 390 Mbps.

With that in mind, you are right, it shouldn't buffer at all, even at slow speeds.

That' a useful table! You're right, i was wrong to use theoretical maxes.

Just a small correction though, the document you linked shows that Computers can actually get upto 585 Mbps on 802.11ac so the lower 390Mbps is due to some different bottleneck on phones.

All that said, i think we're both still in agreement that all of this shouldn't matter for OP just trying to stream Kayo.

  • Which point is it connecting to? Could be connecting to one that is not the closest.

  • I had a similar problem with different hardware, it turned out that the TV would connect on 2.4G and then sometime later it would switch to 5G and that's when problems would start. I made a seperate SSID for 2.4g and only let the TV connect to that - no problem since.

Actually had the same issue with one of my two Samsung tablets, same solution. The tablets can and do work on 5G elsewhere, just not here.

    • You can’t set different SSID on google for 2.4/5

      • ah ok, bummer. Then I hope that's not the problem.

I've been using Nest WiFi for years now and never had problems. I can stream from multiple providers at 4k with no issues even back when i was on 100/20 plan. I'm now on the 1000/50 plan and it's still great (i don't really see a difference because going from no buffering to no buffering is all the same :) )

I think it's more likely your TV's WiFi capabilities. I have a LG B6 and i found that it's fine at streaming 4k but if i try to stream 4k+HDR from my local plex server it will start buffering. The only way i got around this is by running an ethernet cable from my Nest WiFi point directly to my TV.
I take that back, apparently your TV model supports up to WiFi6.

    • Mines been same (but I’m only on 100/20). I am thinking of switching routers though just because I’m after wifi 6

  • There's an option for Windows that lets you force 5ghz on your network adapter, I use this for work with combined 2.4ghz/5ghz SSIDs and it's always on 5ghz

Not sure about smart TVs but my NVIDIA Shield has a 'Prefer 5ghz' setting as well
