Can you claim on the other party's insurance?

    • Definitely not for however long it takes until the new car shows up.

Source: same boat as OP; currently renting one out of my own pocket as I need it, otherwise public transport life. ETA for new car is supposed to be October (ordered at Easter), but I’m expecting more Easter 2024

    • Only till insurance settles or the other party settles.

  • Insurance doesnt provide a rental?

They do. Until your settlement gets paid out and they tell you to return the hire car within two business days.

      Source: my situation right now

Insurance for rental stops once they pay you out.

      Yeah. Been paid out.
Did have rental car for a week while the assessment was being made

But cheap banger with rego. Sell when done.

    • Not many cheap ones at the moment

      Found hellocars.com.au, from $130/wk

        from $130/wk

That's less than $20/day and that includes insurance etc.
How much cheaper are you looking for?

        • Yeah might be this one

Found it after posting the OP

      • There’s always cheap cars around, cheap being relative. If I had the payout from a written off car and only had paid the deposit for a new one I’d shove $4-5k in my pocket, cruise scumtree and Faceache Martketscam and have a replacement car within 3 days.

end of he day if you only own it for 3 months (could stretch to more waiting for a new car) you’ll be able to sell it for the same as you bought it for.

What about something like GoGet or CarNextDoor and only rent a car when you absolutely have to drive. And driving to work and parking it all day is not what I mean by “absolutely have too”.

It is when you work night shift and finish at 2am

  • Sometimes the new car dealer might be able to organise a courtesy car at a reasonable cost untill your new car arrives.

  • Id buy a run around car and sell it for a small loss for quick sale in 3 months

    buy a 15yo beater for $2k

  • Bayswater. Best value. Well it was back in the day

  • If you want long term rental, send rental company a email, they will give you a quote with a discount pricing. Both Hertz and Europcar do that, not sure about others.
