When Would You Re-Apply for AmEx CC after Being Rejected?

I had to wait 18 months to be a new member again before applying for the Amex Ultimate card to get the bonus points. Sadly by then I've had a long term Citibank card with 15K limit, plus a new ANZ black card with another 15K, and perhaps a St George card that was already closed but probably still appeared on my credit record, that's probably why they rejected me for the first time. Called them after 3 weeks and was told I should get a letter with more info to appeal etc.. but haven't received anything. I really want this card. How long should I wait before trying to re-apply again, will that make them reject me forever?

When you are in a similar or better circumstance than when you were first approved for the card.

I'm confused, were you holding all those cards when you applied?

    • I was holding 2 - ANZ and Citibank, but on my credit report there were 3, because the St George card i closed in May still looked open. I forgot to check the credit report before applying for Amex

      • You should be OK after closing all those cards and having them show as closed on your credit reports. Might take a month or so? Then reapply. That's what I'd do, anyway.

        • Citibank - likely to keep forever as it's fee free for life. ANZ - was hoping to keep until I get the Amex cuz it offers insurance with Covid coverage while Citibank doesn't. So if I can't get Amex at least I'll have this one. I'll probably try again after the St George disappears from my credit report. Was just wondering if there's some kind of rules that I should wait for X months before reapplying

@macr0hard: just an FYI and not sure how it'll apply in your scenario, but with NAB acquisition of Citi, that fee-free for life may be coming to an end over the next couple years (maybe sooner). Let's hope they transition you to a similar fee-free for life card but that seems unlikely.

            • @JDMcarfan: I know, I figured that day might come soon but who knows maybe NAB doesn’t know it’s fee free lol

St George are notorious for delayed closures.

I had one still active a year after i closed it.
When i called them they were adamant they'd closed it. Turns out they overbilled their annual fee and refunded it after 6 months (after an internal audit). As my account was in credit it was still open, was denied credit cards for a solid year before reaching out to them and they finally sent a cheque through.

        Useless.

        • Omg I need to check with them then, it’s already almost 3 months for me

You will need to wait or you will be automatically declined for applying twice in a short amount of time.

I had this happen with Amex earlier in the year. They don't even call you to ask any questions, they will just send you a letter with declined in it.

    • yeah i know, just not sure how long. The bonus points promo ends in a few weeks :(

I think they normally say 6 months wait.

I got accepted less than 6 months after I was declined. September 30 2021 (declined) - Feb 23 2022 (approved)

          • @stirlo: @sitrlo Did they ask for payslips or for NOA/tax return?

@RockinIt: No. I met all the requirements for the card in September. I just got rejected for having made an application a few days before. So no need to provide any extra details

I put both my applications in within around 5 days. I forgot to have a friend refer me so I withdrew my first application then when I reapplied with the referral later they auto declined.

30k is a lot of cc limit for a lot of people (obviously I don't know your specific circumstance, you could have a high yield car).

That's the problem with the citibank signature card. The high minimum limit. But hey fee free for life is nice.

Ps, any changes to their benefits?

30k is a lot of cc limit for a lot of people

It's a massive amount. Banks are meant to be sure you can repay the balance credit limit + interest within 3 years for the product to be suitable. It used to be you just had to service the interest charges.

With a $30k credit limit, this would mean paying back more than $42K in 3 years. With another card of $5k, it becomes $50k in 3 years.

    • Not that I know of but I’m sure NAB will make some changes in due time. I’m happy with a lower limit but the ANZ black also has the $15k min limit :(

They didn't reject your application yet.

I've applied for Amex card at the beginning of May. It took 8 weeks to get approved. I didn't call them to follow up, just patiently waited and then email came through that the card has been approved. They must be understaffed. Just wait for your turn.

    • Sadly I called them and they said it was unsuccessful, was advised of the rejection letter I would get but still no sign of it

  • Ammex had rejected me in past for mesely $2000 limit on Essentials card, While other banks had not been hesitant to honor me 3x that amount in Credit limit.
Never looked at ammex since then, Since I know how unreliable their approval process is going to be. And they just gonna straight up refuse me anyway (even when I meet all T&C's)

Maybe they refused you because you can’t spell Amex.
