Energy Australia Gas Bill Is Double Last Years

Hi: Just a quick question, we are with Energy Australia and have been for years we recently got our gas bill for $370 and its more than double this time last year it was $179.

Now I know the prices were going up but double seems a bit much for 2 people in a house we have a gas stove and water heater and a gas heater in the lounge room only are usage says its up 4% over last years but dammmmmmn is this normal increase in price ? Or is Energy Australia bending me over.

Thanks in advance.

  • Tell us what your rates were last year and what your rates are this year + consumption numbers. Very hard to tell.

    • MJ —- This Bill 14367.07 MJ
Last years 13104.66 MJ Says 4% increase

It's pretty hard for them to bend you over. You always get notices of rate increases, the onus is on you to switch around.

Just check your current MJ usage for past 2 months and your MJ usage for the same period last year. If you used more MJ this year then that explains the increase. I don’t think gas prices have doubled so it must be usage increase?

Oh shit my apologies and thanks for asking for more details , i assumed i was paying double last years bill when i checked my past bill payment in my combank account it showed we paid $179 to energy australia this time last year , but double checking on my energy australia account it showed we had credit which brought the cost down to $179 , so in the total amount payable it showed $179 when the full amount was $326 so not much of a rise then .

This is going to look like a conspiracy theory but they started to use wastewater to create biogas in some areas.

The heating value of this gas should be lower and therefore you would be using much more gas per cubic meter. Who knows…

*Naturally bio-gas has a lower heating value.

Maybe there is something similar in Melbourne.

    • Was on ABC. People using it for cooking. I don't know how I feel about waste water. Fruit and veggies left overs I'd be okay with. If you chuck meat in there it would basically smell like dead bodies.

      • Um, no; you need to understand what wastewater is.

  • Hi, Twodogs.
I find your energy provider Energy Australia’s RATES are more expensive (?) than my Globird. First of all my situation is almost the same as yours , two persons only , one gas water heater heating up water and stove, but I have a Brivis gas heater heating up my whole house as wife fears of cold ( whereas you said you use on heater only in your lounge room). So my monthly gas bill usage is 13,500 Mj = $ 225 whereas yours is 7,180 Mj = $ 185.00 ( 14367 divided by 2 or $370 divided by 2 ). The reason I used more Mj is probably we turned on our gas heater more for the whole house and you used lesser because you used one heater only in your lounge room. I almost consumed double more Mj a month than yours but the cost in real money sense is only 27% more I.e $40.00 more. I hope you understand what I have been trying to show you the comparison. Perhaps you should check with the website of vic.gov.energy comparison .

    • Thank you i will check vic.gov.energy comparison site .

When you get an energy bill the first thing you should look at is consumption, not the $. This is especially important when prices are rising fast.
