Why Can We See Who "up" Votes but Not Who Negs Comments?

I've tried to rationalise the possible reasons for this but I've never understood it.

Can the mod team or any one else she'd some light on this? I'm happy to be proved wrong but it doesn't make sense to me.

It flies counter to giving a justified reason every time you neg a deal.

      FYI - I negged you.

        but who negged you?

        • +2

          It was meee

          • +1

            @surg3on: I understand
            You get an up vote

            • +2

@JelIyfish: Im only allowed 5 neg votes and usually @slavoz hogs them all. Feel the love!

Personally I'd rather see votes removed entirely from all websites. When comments get negative votes they often get auto hidden which while in theory is supposed to stop problems - it really just stiffles discussion and turns every page into an echo chamber of the same opinion.

By all means have hearts or plusses or whatever , but negs and hiding comments is detrimental IMO

No it isn't. Letting people just bleat factually incorrect and sometimes dangerous commentary is harmful to some people. Remember the "free mosque visits" posts from yesteryear that got a lot of attention from people giving their little political/racist/extreme views? I for one are glad there were down votes on that because some people linked to some pretty graphic and horrible stuff.

      • +1

Then they can be moderated by the report function.

      • +3

On the other hand factually correct information is negged simply because people don't like to hear it.

      • You do know that downvotes/upvotes is not a measurement of factuality.

Point being, many people can agree, but that does not make what you say correct. This is entirely the problem that reddit has, "controversial" posts get hidden because sections of a "community" will flock to and downvote content until it is hidden, even if that post is entirely fact based. The conversations then turn into who can jerk each other off the most without causing waves for internet updoots.

  • Asked the exact same question before myself… so, what's the point of the 'vote' system on Ozbargain anyway?

    On a side note…

Recently I posted a deal and then someone negged it, after the deal had expired, saying that there are better deals available without providing any proof of it. I reported to mods but was told that community will decide. Well, that may be the case if the deal is active but community wouldn't bother if the deal is expired. That's why I think voting after deal expiry shouldn't be allowed.

    • Ahahha
      Good point
So the one thing that the mods are trying to get people to do isn't actually happening

      System sounds a little broken

the only people who upvote my comment are bots.

please upvote this i want to crack 100

Please use this comment to get your daily neg in.

    You know you want to.

Great. Now I'll have to wait for my negs to recharge :(

Many people just want to neg everything like spoiled kids whinging about lollies…

I do support the push to see who negged what so we can root out and ban the negative nancys that ruin things for everyone.

It’s like their entire purpose on earth is to neg deals and comments and that being the high point of their pathetic careers.

See if this comment gets negged anonymously by the cowardly faceless skunks lol

    • Aren’t you a pleasant chappy.

    • +1

I would neg this, but I have ran out of negs.

But seriously, points on OzBargain are valueless. Who cares if someone negs you. :/

    • +1

Negative votes on deal posts require a justifying comment

Negative votes on comments are capped at 5 per day per user, so it's not like one person is sitting there dishing out the nets, it's a measure of sentiment from the masses who choose to vote.

    • Skunk reporting in.

  • +5

I vote for the neg vote to be increased to 10 per day. There are just too many stupid comments for 5.

  • +4

Why do you care about it? I've never been affected by upvotes or downvotes. Couldn't care less about it.

  • It's to prevent over negativity and hostile personal attacks.

From memory the negative votes ability on here is a fairly new edition? It used to just be upvotes wasn't it?

  • Why Can We See Who "up" Votes but Not Who Negs Comments?

    bikies are real

  • Salty McNegNeg

  • Ex mod here, used to cause arguments. And just downvoting each other.

    • Is being an ex OzBargain mod like being ex military? Do people thank you for your service when you are in uniform? Is there some form of pension?

Also thank you for your service.

      • Sadly no pension, priority boarding, or females throwing themselves at me.

A Mod life is a simple life :(

Complaining about neg votes/downvotes/dislikes will always result in more coming your way. You are feeding them by showing you care. Welcome to the internet.

  • -3

Here is a perfect scenario as to why the people who downvote should have their names visible…

And what would be the difference if you could see who negged you?

  • +3

If anything we should have OzB premium memberships that allow us unlimited negs or at least bonus/super-negs for those times one neg just isn't enough.

Other types of negs we should consider are:
Survivor-style negs where user with most negs in a week is banned.
Automatic negs where a user of your choice receives a neg automatically on commenting.
Neg with anonymous comment so you could send a anonymous comment along with your neg vote.
Negative nancy avatar assigned to user who hand out most negs in a week.
Reverse-neg where a OzB premium member can reverse the neg and put it back on the negger
    Neg-immunity for your birthday
Negs-by-mail where a user gets a box of smelly garbage in the mail
Neg-dating: The two users for the month who neg each other the most go on a live-streamed date to flesh out their differences, and maybe in the process understand each other, and possibly fall in love

  • Does it really matter?

I still get what I need from the site.

Periodically. Looking and perodic impulse purchases. Plus plenty of lops from the bargain community.

  • So that u won't feel bullied or be depressed over it.

    It's for your own good.

  • You might be horrible to me.

So its better you not know that I neg everyones post.

  • +2

I count negs as a vote anyway, stirred someones shit lol.
