Secondary Glazing Home Window (Perth)

Hello fellow ozbargainer,

I am looking to install 2 secondary glazing window to 2 bedrooms and I have received a quote of $3.9k from a local Perth business for the the work inclusive of GST.

I am still shopping around for another quote but I am unable to locate another company that do secondary glazing instead they offer double glazing which is not what I am looking for.

Anyone know of other local Perth business that do secondary glazing for windows? Cheers

  • Dumb question, but why do you want secondary glazing? For noise, heating/cooling or sun damage or something else?

    • In England getting double glazing is a common aspirational thing. It's basically insulated glass, makes it much easier to heat your home.

      • Thanks for the answer to why…. You are not the OP, so your answer is useless.

  • Hey Andy,

Primarily air traffic noise, secondary glazing will be cheaper/better than double glazing from my research. But do correct me if I am wrong thanks.

    • Have you compared the cost of replacing the existing glass with something thicker?

To block out noise, a big air cap is important. I've got double glazed (I think 6mm glass, 2mm gap and 4mm glass) which is perfect for insulation but I can still hear a lot of noise from outside. A mate with secondary windows (5cm gap) has a lot less outside noise inside.

      • Yes this is the main reason I am going forward with secondary glazing instead of double glazing. Double glazing will cost more due to the extra work of having the existing window removed and replaced. With secondary glazing they will install a secondary window panel behind the existing window which works better at blocking out 50-70% of the noise.

        • I'm a glazier of 10 years+ and have installed both. From my experience, if you want to block out noise, nothing beats a double glazed unit fitted with laminated glass. Secondary glazing is ok if you want a cheaper option and don't mind the way they look (the very noticeable double reflection is horrible imo).

Additionally, you want to ensure the sound pollution is actually coming through the glass and not the area around the window frame and trim (due to window being poorly insulated behind the moulding). If this is the case with your window, secondary glazing wont be much help.

      • Sound attentiation will also depend on the structure around the window.

Unless you can compare before and after for both, it could be that your mates place also has particularly good walls along with the windows.

Post job on Hipages, Oneflare or a similar platform.
Specify that you want secondary glazing, not double glazing.
    Get three quotes for everything.
Compare quoted prices against their reviews anbd completed works.
    Engage trade.

    • Good idea, will do so tomorrow. Cheers
