Cheapest +61 Number for Receiving SMS Only?

I'm trying to setup a Aus number to be able to receive sms only. What's your cheapest method of doing this?

I've looked at getting a $2 prepaid sim from Optus/Kogan although they state the service will 'expire' after x amount of days of not been recharged.

Thanks in advance!

  • All Mobile phone SIMS expire if not recharged or if they are post paid then when you stop paying the bill.

This isn't true, Amaysim prepaid will still receive calls/sms for a year without recharging. I've heard other members say this, mainly @Rather be Travelling.

Also Aldi pay as you go for $5 but not sure if they work overseas.

      • So you want the cheapest SIM that works overseas for getting OZ SMS's for at least a year?

        • If you only need to receive the sms you could just leave the sim in an Android phone in Australia and access the messages using https://messages.google.com/

The aldi one does work overseas - you just have to enable roaming. This is definitely the cheapest option for a year.

Aldimobile $5 sim on 365 PAYG (365 day expiry)

can still receive calls/sms for a further 90 days after that :)

    • Awesome thanks for the suggestion. After the 365 days you can just pay another $5 for 365 more?

      • $15 min topup

  • Everyone wants mobile number for multiple ubereats/doordash/deliveroo/menulog…etc accounts.

$60 recharge gets you 365 days Optus Prepaid Long Expiry

Aldi $5. 365 days. Buy a new sim card and repeat. They work well for GPS trackers too. The included credit lasts ages. Goes against their TOS but they can't track it. all puns intended.

    Optus Flex - $2 a year

    • Can I still receive calls in OZ while the service is inactive? I don't leave for a couple months, and don't use phone much, thinking this could work till I leave and add the $1 any random day I might need to call bank etc before I go.

Yes - you can receive calls and sms but you cannot place calls or send sms :)

        • Thanks. Ordered the SIM. Sounds perfect for my needs.
How long does it take for re-subscribing for a day to take effect? i.e. Service is inactive but I want to switch it on for $1, 1day to make a call/use data….is it as soon as the payment is made or does it take hours?

@JamesLucas: Almost instantly ! The longest I’ve waited was 10/15 minutes.

@parisian: Great. Thanks for all the feedback. Was your posts on here over time bought my attention too it.

      • sounds interesting

the t&cs say it is recharged between 10-12pm sydney time

it also says the maximum inactive time is 186 days

so you can keep a number for $2-3 per year on the 4g $1 plan

i couldn't see anything in t&cs about being able to receive calls/sms while inactive, but i will assume it is correct

        • You are 100% correct.
Currently in Europe, receiving sms with no active recharge and it also worked in the UAE during my layover.

  • Does the $2 boost sim give you a number after activating or need to recharge with credit before its lets you receive a message?

  • Looks like they got rid of the $2/year thing :(

    damn
