A good price on this set that I’ve been keeping an eye on for several months. It hovered between $30 and $40 during that time so this is the lowest I’ve seen it on Amazon.

I purchased this in the hope it’s a good introduction to D&D for children. From what I’ve read, this is not a set aimed at adults as it’s very simple with not a lot of variation, but reviews from most parents really rate the storytelling.

What's recommended for adults starting out?

  • +4

Man I remember playing AD&D in my teen years. My mate had all the books and was usually the dungeon master.

I played a lot on my C64 as well: Champions of Krynn, Pools of Radiance. And The Bards Tale was a favourite! (not D&D though)

Darkness and spinners in Bard’s Tale 😓

        And 396 Berserkers…

Oh the spinners. It took me so long to figure out where the place was where you can get advanced. Can’t remember the name.

But I had a monk called Head Smasher (I was early teens) who I kept advancing and getting heaps of experience. Ended up so good, even with just leather armour and no weapons, he would do critical strikes in one go and barely got touched. Other than magic. I didn’t really get far in the actual adventure though, I couldn’t work out the catacombs or tower or something from memory.

I was blown away when I learned there’s a real Skara Brae, ancient town ruins on an island off the coast of Scotland. Never made it there when we were in Scotland.

Ah… El Cid from Skara Brae, you scoundrel. Never did figure out what "Irkm Desmet Daem" meant…

    Minimum age recommendation: 120?

    • +5

Probably collective age. 3 childish 40 year olds or 12 bored 10yo children.

      10+ years or 120+ something…..

its amazon they like to use months instead of years

  • Thanks OP, bought it. I'm excited to try a game with the kids. Maybe we can live out our own "Adventure Zone"! :D

Thanks OP got one, my 8yo just read the D&D Dungeon Academy book and loved it. She might enjoy this.

She is excited about the D&D movie coming out next year.

Awesome! I see there’s going to be more of these coming. I’ll have to dig up my old D&D playing mates and go see it.

Led zeppelin?! That was a surprise! Very nice though.

  • Thanks OP! Bought to play with my kids when they’re old enough.

People wanting to play with younger kids might like to check out Hero Kids.

Started looking more into Board Games as the kids (8 and 10) constantly (painfully) playing Monopoly and grabbed this for something different. The game was Ok, but certain aspects made so much more sense when we moved onto playing D&D (wish I had known more about D&D prior). We're now halfway through the D&D "Starter Set", kids are really enjoying it - we've included more puzzles/riddles (plenty of internet resources) and ended up modifying a table to embed a 40" LCD TV for use with compatible diigtal maps/videos and have since 3D printed mini-figurines/dice boxes/condition rings. Also bought the "Essentials Kit", understanding can be used to follow on from the "Starter Set" and there being 3 free additional add on adventrues downloadable from WOTC (also comes with a DM screen and extra cards). But as mentioned by others, the D&D basic rule set is availble from WOTC as a free download so can get into it for nothing.

I’ve enjoyed playing this with my 7yo and we are ready to take it to the next level. I like the idea of 3D printing miniatures. Do you have any recommendations for printers?

You might want to check out a game called Stuffed Fables. Kids use their own teddy bears and go on missions.

If they are into Marvel, Marvel United is also a great co-op game where you work together around the board to defeat the enemy. My 6 year old plays it with me a bit.
