American Express Travel Insurance Claim Experience

Hi OzB Fam,

I'm heading to Malaysia for a couple of weeks around the end of September and have paid for everything so far using my Amex Qantas Ultimate card. I know it comes with Travel insurance provided you use said card to pay for things such as flights, hotel etc. But could anyone shed some light on what it is actually like to lodge a claim with them should the need arise? If it's a nightmare then I might have to consider getting another policy.

Cheers

pre-covid i raised a claim with them (kid got sick while in the US, cost us $400 (!!!) to see a doc and get medication), and it was relatively easy. Supplied them with the documents, and had the money back a week later

    • Now the question would be, do they cover covid related illness or delays ?

  • I can only comment on travel I made in 2016 — my first time in the USA; LA to be exact.

After a very long flight, my (now wife) girlfriend left a bag containing a purse with all our USD cash and both our passports.

The insurance claim was surprisingly easy. From start to end it only took around 10 days and pretty much just back and forth emails to prove that we had what we were claiming in possession during the trip, as well as a police report that we had to do in LA.

The evidence was pretty straightforward, just transaction screenshots or even a photo of us holding that specific item on the trip was enough as evidence.

The underwriter was Chubb; I'm not sure if it's changed now or if Qantas Ultimate has a different underwriter.

    • Thanks for the detailed story! I checked and it's still underwritten by Chubb.

Have lodged for their other insurance. Easy process. Make sure you're organised and you have evidence lodged. Missing things will delay your claim.

Otherwise smooth and hassle free tbh

I've lodged several claims via their insurance. Been pretty easy, quick and effective.

I lodged an income loss insurance (fractured foot during holiday) with AMEX platinum charge insurance. They paid 3 months of income loss with a max cap of 3k per month and I got paid 3k each month. Pretty good but they have a weird schedule in responding to emails…
