Vibration at 100km/Hr (4 New Tyres Fitted 3 Weeks Ago)

Will call tyre shop up tomorrow but wanted to get some advice before doing so.

Replaced old tyres with 4 new ones about 3 weeks ago. (20 inch rims)- 245/35/r20.

First time on a freeway since the fitting and noticed a tonne of vibration that was not there before that.
Obviously only noticed it now due to the speed.

All that was done was 4 tyres fitted and balanced. That was all.

I did have some reservations about where to go but I thought they did a good job for the price overall.

What could be the cause of this new vibration feeling? (Could they have rushed the balance process?)

Thanks

It definitely sounds like a balancing issue. First and simpliest thing to check too.

can you see balance weights (maybe on inside)
I once had vibrations on way home from fitting new tyres (went on 100km road to be sure)
Went back within 15 minutes, and noticed lack of balance weights on two wheels.
Shop response, we'll redo they must have fallen off
    Never been back there
    .

    • So they re did and you didnt have to go back after issue fixed?

        correct
        .

        • Sorry was editing my comment.
I re read what you said…thanks Nugs.

Go out and check that all your wheel nuts are tight…

But like others said, 20” rims are usually flashy, so they tend to put inboard weights to balance them. If they didn’t clean the rim, they don’t stick too well and can come off…

Other things could be worn shocks, worn steering joints, worn wheel bearings if the re-balance fails to solve the issue.

    • Great thanks.
I actually did that as soon as I got home.
Reason being: Couple years back Toyota "forgot" to tighten and I ended up driving home with only 2 nuts on one of the wheels.

Wheel-and-tyre joints are notorious for just giving them a few ugga-duggas with the rattle gun and calling it done.

        • +2

They're also good at loosing nuts and using a few extra ugga-duggas to make one with a different thread pitch fit.

      • +3

2 nuts is sometimes the right amount

      • You can never have too many nuts.

    • Or prop shaft on a rear wheel drive car.
Happened to me (40 years ago).

Possibly a bad tie rod end that the new tyres are causing to portray symptoms. But probably balancing.

  • happened to me. Just brought it back, watched them balance all 4, meaning they didn't balance it at all when I got the tyres. They were like, oh weights fell off one. BS…

As most people said could be balancing issue, my question is what brand and model was the tyres and what did you change into?
Some people go from a sports or premium tyre then try to save money and go to eco tyres which allows all that NVH/noise come into the car

    • I will be judged because I do have a cheaper option at the moment. But the previous tyres were on par with the ones I replaced. They are still a sport tyre though. Didn't go from Sport to Eco.
I hardly drive anymore as I use partners company car.
Noise levels though, they sound fine.

not judging you, just trying to find the reasons to your problem :)

        • Yeah that was the first thing I made sure of but the previous ones were probably 5x as bad and had no vibration at all.

  • Vibration at 100km/Hr

    Probably the speed bumps…

    1. Remove you wheels one at a time,
    2. check your balance weights if they are still there
    3. reattach your wheels and torque them down

I will be back at the shop tomorrow no doubt making them do that.
Funny because I noticed some vibration the first week but was only on the freeway for 1 stop. Fast forward 2 more weeks, to another stretch of a different freeway and bam!

  • Tempe tyres did a shit job sticking the balancing weights. they put a lot of the 5g ones. when i got home a few had already fallen off.

however i can't feel any unsavoury vibrations and so, meh

  • Has this with one of my cars a long time ago. New tyres, vibrations. Re balanced, no. On car balance, no. disc machine, no. Turned out the wheel was a bit bent.

  • How are the brake pads?

    • +1

Brakes are good. They re balanced the fronts which I think did the trick.
The car already having aftermarket wheels and probably a not so expensive tyre this time around also probably played a factor but
      it's not as vibrating.

      Thanks:)

Glad to hear you got it sorted, because my only idea was going to be you telling your car firmly that you do not consent to being vibrated and that the car should cease molesting you immediately or you'll get the feds involved.

😂😂 Can never get over the title of that forum post.

  • I had this problem with some cheap Charlie Chinese tyres in the past. Went back to the tyre shop and after a quick inspection, they just replaced one of the tyres and the problem was solved (apart from the total lack of grip in the wet).

It could also be your wheel alignment.
I always have an alignment as well as having wheels balanced when buying new tires .
A simple pot hole or hitting a curb and gutter at low speed can make balance or alignment go out.

Check that all 4 wheels (20 nuts) are tight
Then ring the tyre place & explain. Be nice and they will be sorry about it all & ask you to come back for a re-balance.
Do u have your chit? It should not matter thou
I take it the vibration increases as u speed up & it is in the steering wheel? Or is it in the seat of your pants?
Or is it when u put your foot on the brakes?
Just because u got new tyres a few weeks ago does not mean something else can't stuff-up

  • Do you have a Hub Centric ring?

Hub centric rings are important because they secure the wheel in place, and they ensure that the wheels are perfectly centered on the vehicle's hub. This helps to prevent any type of vibration issue

  • I had an issue once where exactly at 68kph and 101kph I was getting a vibration. Even the dealer could not work it out initially, turned out to be wheel bearing was faulty but wasn't growling, just felt a vibration.
