What to Look for When Buying a Second Hand Phone?

Hello,

I am considering buying a secondhand Pixel 6 off market place. I've never bought a second hand phone before.

What sort of risks come with this? I've seen some Pixel 6 Pro's for well under the $1k mark. What am i missing here?

my main concern is warranty and a phone being reported stolen/locked.

Thanks

my main concern is warranty and a phone being reported stolen/locked.

    this

and also pretty common to hear of scum bag behaviour where the phone gets smashed screen, but replaced with a very cheap screen with impaired functionality but then presented and sold as a perfect phone - sometimes even with warranty (really common with iphones due to re-sale values). But then it wont be covered under warranty.

You'll also want to make sure to totally wipe the phone and do a fresh setup, in case that wasn't bleedingly obvious.

    • I hadn't consider the screen/repaired device issue. Thanks for that. Not really worth it to save $150 or so I'd say.

150 saving off a $1000 phone is nothing and not worth the risk

        • Agreed, thanks for your input

      • 100% not worth the risk buying second hand for that difference. You can get 5-10% off a brand new one with rewards programs/discounts etc if that's make or break for you.

Run the IEMI to see it isn't stolen. And make sure that you receive it unlocked and all accounts have been removed before handing over any cash.

    • Can it be reported stolen after the sale by the previous owner? They do a police report and claim insurance and keep your cash?

It can.. you can ask for a proof of purchase and maybe sign something saying “I sell phone to whoever”, so if they do go this route, you can get it unlocked

Buy off eBay using PayPal and check sellers feedback. If they haven't been a member for a long time and have no feedback then don't buy.

Thanks for your help everyone. Confirmed my thoughts of just waiting til the phone is on sale and use discounted GCs.

  • I used to buy my phones second hand because it saved a lot of money. I was lucky and never had a bad one. I don’t anymore though because people expect to get close to retail for used phones now so it’s just not worth the hassle or risk for me anymore.

    Just dont do it.

    • That's not what Nike says.

      • They are wrong… always have been

  • Get new one if u can afford it.

  • I bought a note 8 from Phonebot in St Kilda couple years back and after few weeks of using it, the phone was blocked, I couldn't do anything with it. I decided to check the IMEI number and turned out that the phone was reported stolen. I was lucky that I bought it off a shop but it was still a tons of hassle to get my money back so I wouldn't recommend it unless you know very well what you're doing
