Extending Ethernet Cable from inside The House to outside

Hi All,

Planning to install a poe security camera and just wondering how easy is it too extend the ethernet cable from inside to outside. Can I do it without climbing into the roof space? Doing it just by removing a few roof tiles from outside and running the cable from behind the wall that way?

Yes everything is possible. But we don't know anything about what you are working with or what your house is like? We know nothing about the location, whether you have bricks/weatherboard, etc.

    TLDR: Yes

    • Brick walls.

      • Honestly yes you can. It's very simple and may require you to drill a hole. The complexity comes up to the internal structures of your house

  • Very easy especially if you run it in conduit, but as you will hear, running through walls roofs under floors etc its illegal unless you are a licensed cabler.

    • Which is absolutely ridiculous.

    • Insurance claim rejected?

    • What if it's an old house raised off the ground with basic wooden floorboards, they drill a hole in the floor and run a cable just loose under the house. Still illegal? Asking for a friend 15 years ago.

  • Yes if you can get access and there are no obstacles in the way and you can make the roof water tight again and you have the skills to do the job and your Ethernet cable is not CAT 5 or below and it is less than 100m in total length and…and …

  • Depending on pitch, I'd rather get into roof space than remove tiles

Having read your post and having absolutely no idea of what we're working with - 100% no. Impossible.

  • Just throw it out a window, solved.

    • This, I run my PoE ethernet cable out the windows for camera. No need license.

  • I dont really know how to explain but I will give it a try…

So the house has brick walls on the outside and the roof is tiled. The carport is on the side of the living room and share the same wall.

    | Living room |
    | Living room | Carport
    | Living room |

I need to run a cable from the living room side to the carport side.

    • Get up there and have a look yourself ?? Or just pay someone, saves you falling from the ceiling or damaging your property until there's a new post from you asking to fix something else.

I've done it multiple times gotten into the crawl space you have to make sure your insulation isn't made up of asbestos etc or if it's fibreglass use gloves and a mask etc.

      • I don't mind getting in there, but was wondering if all this can be done from outside as in from the carport side by removing a few roof tiles and feeding the wire that way.

You can do it that way that's usually how the electricians do it, you might need to kick the bottom of the tile of remove the clip holding it then it should come loose

It’s likely to be easier to lift a few tiles than to wriggle your way through to where the roof height is so low. You may not even be able to reach far enough with your arm from where your body runs out of space.

  • Easy. Get Cat 6 cable. Nothing else to it.

What if the op doesn't have a cat? let alone a lazy half dozen of the little things….

No need for Cat 6, weather sealed Cat 5e would be more than enough.

  • You won't have issue with running cable through the roof space but the key details is where the cable start. If it is beginning from a connection point on the internal wall you will have some struggle get it up to the roof space depending on the age of the house. There will be noggins somewhere in wall and you'll need long shank drill bit get through noggins and the top plate. Some house might have noggins with the same width of the stud so drilling is the only way. If it's just external wall then it'll be much easier.

    • It's only on the external wall side.

If you remove the tiles near the gutter line near where you wish to mount the camera, you should be able to see down the gap between the outer brick wall and the inner brick wall (if double brick) or the gyprock / insulation (if brick veneer). It then becomes a matter of cutting a hole in the inner wall to access the gap. There may be some roof sarking which you can cut through and patch later on if desired. Best to wear a mask and try not to do it on a windy day as inner roof gets dusty over the years and you don't want to breathe that in.

    • Thanks. Will try it later today.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I did it today. It turned out to be a simpler job than expected. Removed a few tiles starting from the gutter side and fed the cable along the wall.

Had to cut the plasterboard from the room side to catch the cable and one hole in the fascia to extend the cable to where I wanted it to be.

Took me roughly an hour and a half.

    Cheers
