Assistance with Lawn

Hi

In NSW.

Need some assistance in getting my lawn back it shape. The space is about 5 metres by 2 metres. It was flooded just like any other backyard with the rain. The grass nearest the wall, gets the most sun and that seems to be okay. However closest to the bush gets the least sun. There are green patches of mould. I've cut the bush, to fence line to allow for as much as sunlight as possible.

Further comments.

Should have added. It's a rental. While the condition wasn't great to start with would like to make as good as I can.

My first step would be to aerate the soil by stabbing it with a garden fork. It looks very compacted.

If it’s just that small space I’d do something to improve drainage, rip up the old and lay new turf after the appropriate prep. If larger that might be too expensive. Make sure the new turf is shade tolerant. I’d also consider something other than a lawn in that space.

    • Thanks for comment. Just added it's a rental, so limited what I can do

      • Ah… I wonder if the landlord would do something

Soil looks compacted, look to aerate it. I use a drill and a large auger bit cause I'm too cheap to buy a proper aerator. A garden fork may compact it even further.

Fertilise at the beginning of spring and some water should do it some good. Check out Australian Lawn Fanatics on FB, plenty of them can help.

    • i've got an old cycle manual plugger which i occasionally use. i never thought of using an auger bit in a drill. sounds easier. does the bit get continually clogged up?

      • Nah works well when the soil is a bit moist

    Artificial turf FTW

    • Should have added. It's a rental

  • Not much you can do until the weather improves. It’s not gonna grow or green much until spring.

    Aerate, wait.

    • Thanks

      • And stay off it where possible while it’s in the current condition.

a nice liberal application of concrete will fix everything

  • With some fork stabbing

it's winter now, i'm sure it will bounce back in the warmer seasons

It's still Winter so wait until it warms up. The green mould will disappear when Summer comes and there is heat to dry it all out.
I would just fork it and sprinkle some lawn seed over it in Spring so it's not too patchy.
Nothing to worry about however it could rain and flood a few more times in the next 12 months…

  • Pee on it give it some of that good nutrients.

  • It looks like buffalo which is a warm season grass so pretty well dormant at the moment just wait for the weather to warm up and it should start growing again and fill in the empty spaces, in the mean time try to stay off it and mow at a higher level buffalo
