That looks like plastic on the control panel. I had an older Kogan one with a plastic control panel and the control panel got melted.

Ideally aim for one with glass for the whole top.

Also: If you haven't used induction yet: It's the future. Better than everything except maybe for gas in terms of cooking performance (but you don't have to worry about dealing with gas!).
As for your pots and pans, if a magnet sticks, it'll work.

Yeah I would go for one with a full glass top including controls. I have the Ikea portable induction cooktop $59 and can vouch for the quality of that one.

      • Does it do a decent job of even cooking? I'm thinking of something that can be left on the boil like soup, stew or sauces for a few hours. If so, could complement a gas set up well.

I use mine outside mainly to sear or fry at high heat. All the portable ones cycle on-off at lower settings AFAIK, so probably not great for maintaining low temps precisely.

Can vouch for the ikea one. Simple button setup. Heat levels 1 to 9. Thats it. I use mine a lot outside the house when frying up steaks, salmon etc so the fire alarm doesnt go off and house doesnt stink. Works a treat

    • I have a plastic control panel and no issues at all, and yes you are mad if you aren't using induction, I have had it for years and just moved into a place with gas and whiles it's OK I still prefer the induction almost always

I've got a random ebay one with a full glass cooktop that works okay for about $45. The active cooking area isn't very big so if I'm cooking eggs in a frypan I get a cooked island of eggs among the egg sea. The seven cooking modes is a bit of a joke as it's basically go hard or go easy. It's great for the coffee percolator.

Probably just means you aren't preheating the pan enough, or that combined with too much in the pan

In built ones are good as they actually simmer and run at a constant lower power.

These cheap portable ones try to imitate low power by cycling on and off full power.

    • Have you seen the bench grinder embedded with magnets to create an induction cooker?
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I9elwrKbfk

I wonder if induction cook top power is modified with the rate of magnet flipping, or possibly with a combination of electro magnet intensity

    • Even my built ins do the same below the half way mark, it's not a problem really. The main problem I have encountered is just some things it's a bigger jump than expected between 2 adjacent settings.

  • We got a single induction unit to see how we would go with in induction cooktop.

    A couple of things.
    - a disappointing number of my pots weren’t suitable
    - you might run into size limits with your bigger pots.

Just get one from Kmart. They are all the same anyway.
