Electric Toothbrush - Family

3 kids, 2 adults.

Any products or tips for family switching to electric?

I'm imagining the bases for a brand are all the same, eg, Oral B? Are there any other ways of minimising duplication, counter space etc? I don't really want to plug in 5 chargers, and I'm not even sure everyone will need their own unit thing? Is changing the brush heads realistic?

  • The toothbrushes need a charge every few weeks and probably not on the same day. If you cbf, set up one charger and coach the kids to charge the toothbrush only when the toothbrush is out of charge. Changing brush heads is doable but not realistic (IMO) because lazy.

Being the Ozbargain forums I expected this to be a topic about sharing a toothbrush between the whole family.

Anyway, why not aim for one with AAs and get a bunch of rechargeables? Then just keep a bunch in the cabinet/draw and charge them as needed Could probably buy 20 AAs and just switch out and charge the whole lot at once.

  • ozbargain way just share one

    • Well, this is what my limiting google actually suggests.. but says people can change the brush heads. I'm not convinced.

  • You can definitely change the heads on them, you can often find oral-b toothbrushes half price, i bought one of the expensive ones years ago and have never looked back, i don't think 1 brush for 5 people is realistic but you and your partner could definitely share one with changing the head, the good ones have their own charging case with 2 spaces for heads and the heads have their own colour ring on them to tell the difference.
For the kids i would probably just get them their own cheap one each when they are half price, just use 1 charger and they can just charge them on alternate days, i find you get at least a week or 2 out of a charge and then you can just put the other chargers away in a cupboard and keep them for spares

  • You don't have to jump straight into more expensive charging unit ones. There's normal battery powered ones to give a try first.

Colgate 360 Optic White Powered Toothbrush is my preferred option but doesn't seem to be stocked much lately. Changeable AA battery and replaceable heads.

  • Just updated old Oral-B (model unknown, battery not holding much charge, wife said it was a supermarket cheaper end one) to an O-B Pro 2000 - same charger.

I'd follow the advice said elsewhere - cheaper one for the kids - mine didn't like the electric.

Heads are swappable but a shade fiddly…also plastic and require some sort of simple gripping mechanism, frequent swapping may cause wear on that?

Would have loved a AA or AAA battery model (as old motor was still good) but couldn't see one in higher end Oral-B.

  • Cogate 250R currently less then half price $19.99 each

I ended up going with a 2-pack Oral B 100 'family edition' for $44 from Shaver Shop.. and I treated myself to an Oral B 9000 for $172. I also got my youngest a $12 Oral B during the Prime Day sales.

I then bought this toothbrush holder thing and we'll try and rotate on the single plugged in charger.

So sort of mission accomplished I think.
