2000 Laser- Wheel Caster Seems out

Hey guys,

My power steering seems heavy when you first break from going straight. Mate looked it over said the PS pump and rack appeared ok. After driving it he suspected too much caster.

Just wondering how you adjust it though without a kit. Or otherwise what else could affect it. (I'm assuming if they're set and forget they were spot on when they left the factory.)

Thoughts appreciated. :)

I would be looking at worn out or seized tie rod ends and steering pivots before worrying about caster.

On most modern cars, caster is usually fixed. So if it was ok and isn’t now… it’s not caster.

  • Old fluid
    lazy pump
    sticking valve in rack
    sticking valve in pump
    worn strut top mount bearings
    bent shock absorber
    sticking ball joint
worn universal joint on intermediate shaft

    • Thanks for the list Brian.
Give us something to work through :)

Maybe book it in for a wheel alignment. It’s jot too expensive and they may diagnose other issues.

It seems unlikely to me that a wheel alignment issue that affects the feel of the steering is likely to be blatantly obvious.

It the steering only feels heavy when initially turning, then gets easier id be looking for something wrong in the steering system.

  • Did you hit anything that may have bent the suspension?

    • No but it's 22 years old. Think I'll just take it to a decent tyre/wheel shop for an alignment.
