Jubilee

Paul Smith are offering Free international shipping for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. This probably isn't a deal for everyone… But if you compare the prices to what you'd pay at David Jones or anywhere else in Oz… It's considerably cheaper. I love Paul Smith. So… deal for me.

By looking at the prices, if you can afford 69 pounds for a beanie, you can afford shipping :P Seriously though, could you tell me the appeal?

    • +1

      The quirkiness of the design.

Might actually order a couple of tee's and cufflinks. Thanks OP.

    • +2

As the OP says, this isn't a deal for everyone, just like how a Merc or BMW deal might not appeal to a Hyundai driver.

      • I drive an older SAAB, so I can appreciate a little quirkiness, but if my car was a beanie, it would still not cost 69 pounds. I can understand where you are coming from with cars, but perhaps not clothing.

        • With cars, people will happily pay more for the status they get when they drive an expensive car, together with better build quality which they believe they are getting. Same with fashion. People buy branded clothing because they think they look better in it, and they might defend by saying how the quality and the cutting is better. At the end, you are paying a premium for the designer's signature and advertising cost. But then, most people would prefer a LG or Samsung TV comparing to a Dick Smith one. By the way, I do like Saabs.

      • Make all the BMW vs Hyundai analogies you want - 70 quid for a beanie is just plain stupid.

What exactly does the BMW of beanies do?

        • Then what can BMWs do on the road that Hyundai's can't do? They both have an engine with 4 wheels, enough safety features and seat the same amount of people, yet many of us are happy to pay 3, 4 or 5 times the price for a Beemer as well as the premium in service cost and insurance. You can say all you want that 70 pounds is too much to pay for a beanie but if someone out there can justify the cost, then saving $10 on shipping isn't so bad a bargain.

        • Errr, a BMW is: safer, better looking, faster, handles better and has thousands of hours of research and testing to make sure it does all of the above. A knock off from China will do the above 1% as well.

A Paul Smith beanie has Paul Smith written on it. A knock off from China will do the above 99.9% as well.

A lot of what you said are perceived. Who's to say a car is safer just bcos it's a Beemer? A Hyundai can have a 5 star crash rating and might last longer than a BMW mechanically. Not a lot of people are fans of the new 1 series' appearance, yet the new Hyundai Veloster gets the nod by many critics just purely on its looks. And who are you to say that Hyundai's or other car company do not invest 1000's of hrs of research into their cars?

Back to the beanie, some people are happy with a Kmart one but there are also someone out there who likes to spend money on their clothes and follow brands just like people who follow Apple products. If you are interested in knock offs from China, you should look at some chinese websites not ozbargain, as I believe most people are here looking for genuine items at a lower than usual price.

        • …follow brands just like people who follow Apple products.

implying everyone who buys an apple product buys it for the apple logo? That's ignorance at it's finest. Believe it or not, some people DO prefer to use mac os.

        • Sorry for making you feel this way. I am also someone who prefer to use MacOS. In fact I've been a Mac user way before iMac and iPod but I am also disappointed with the latest iPhone and iPads. To me Macintosh has always been great with its computers and OS. If u r an Apple user, I am sure u've had to defend it at least once in front of PC users, to justify the premium u r paying for using Apple products. This is like how I am here defending a piece of branded clothing for its premium pricing.

"some people DO prefer to use mac os."

          Good joke.

Edit: Funny thing is I didn't really start to hate apple products until work gave me an iPhone 4. For free. I can't for the life of me imagine why anyone would pay anything, much less a premium, for that piece of shit. Hardware wise, it's so-so. Software? I'd falcon punch the geniuses who thought of turning every one of their userbase into sheep. You can't add or edit the apps on your iphone without backing up everything onto your computer? Eff that.

        • to be fair though he was talking about mac OS(x) and not iOS

        • marketing + brand reputation = kachinggg. Apple has got both departments covered pretty well. I don't defend, i explain. The 'premium' exists because of apple's monopoly, which people don't mind paying for the tech, quality control, easy upgrades- stuff like that. I like using mac os (not lion tho. BLARGH makes me want to punch the screen) but that hasn't stopped me from going after every discount i can get my hands on. To this day, i'm proud to say i've never paid full RRP for any apple product i own.

/edit: @fellator- that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. It's true you can't please everyone. My dad loves his blackberry; I used it for a week and went back to iOS. My mum was on Gingerbread, loved it, but ditched it for iOS 2 weeks back. My sister doesn't care what she uses as long as it takes photos. She's on Ice Cream Sandwich now and doesn't see the need for an iPhone. Everyone's different.

and no 'sale' section either. I browsed for 5 minutes before deciding 65 pounds for a t-shirt was very un-ozbargainlike behaviour.

I stumbled upon a show about Paul Smith a couple of Sundays afternoons ago on ABC TV. He's a very interesting character, even though I think fashion is a huge wank.

    I prefer Dick Smith

We know you like dick :P

  • oh, love Paul Smith… sooo expensive though…

"some people DO prefer to use mac os."

So build a hackintosh using a $400 no-name PC laptop instead of paying the mactax to prove what a creative, hip individual you are.

Although if you do that, nobody will actually KNOW it's a mac, so what's the point?

    • i don't really like these mac/pc/money/functionality debates. They get repeated too often, often by people like you. If you've ever attempted to build a hackintosh, you'll know you need a very close replacement for the part apple uses for their macs. Barring so, you'll need drivers, softwares, codes and sh-t like that to convince the system it's a genuine mac. Been there, done that. Pro tip: every update is a pain in the ass. If you've got the time, by all means. Considering the time value of money, i guess i'd rather stop being a hippy and pay for something that works.

But again, matter of preference. I could say you sound like a 10-year old (creative? hip? pssh. This isn't the 80s anymore), or i could leave it at that and just say "enjoy whatever system you're using right now and have a good day".

  • Great deal, but ASOS also sells some Paul Smith and its always been free postage, some of the same items are less at ASOS for the same item. Paul Smith store has the advantage of a larger range than ASOS.
