Tesla Model Y RWD vs Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD

Hey Guys,

We are currently looking for a new vehicle. We are a family of three (young couple with a pre-schooler). Just sold our High Performance Sedan and looking to add a second SUV to the Family. Also, this will be our first brand new vehicle and so looking to make it a little special one. Currently have base model Japanese SUV and we are in love with it due to space and reliability. Therefore, we started looking at Electric Vehicles.

We were able to get in first allocation (Aug - Nov) Tesla Model Y RWD allocation and looking at September delivery.

In between, Ioniq 5 AWD came out with 130 allocations and I took a punt and was able to get one there too!

Test drove both and MY just does not feel special to me! It is slow, noisy (crashing suspension and echoing interior) and the materials genuinely feel cheap (comparing it to our German Sedan). Wife is not into cars but loves the brand and what it represents (to her). Her colleagues love Tesla and the whole Apple..esq interface (System and Store Interaction) was very appealing. It is like buying a piece of tech rather than a car. Also, it might hold up its value well.

She would not drive the Ioniq 5 due to Hyundai Dealership not being very appealing but I test drove it myself. I was honestly vowed by it. It is a much better vehicle in ‘automobile kind of way’. It is quite quick, comfortable and just has more common sense approach to driving. Also has better Warranty. However, I am not sure how Hyundai’s LiPh batteries would hold up compared to LiFePh Tesla Batteries in the long run.

My concerns, I would get bored with Tesla MY as it is a downgrade as it is too slow with supposedly 194kw, 398Nm (0-100 6.9s) vs I5’s 225kw, 600Nm (0-100 with realistic 4.7s). Ioniq 5 is $9K more expensive.

Also, MY RWD insurance is way higher ($1.9K p.a) vs I5’s ($1.05K p.a). So, just in 8 or so years, the cost will equalise.

Our son loves cars and he wants Ioniq 5 too if that matters!

Not sure about buying a Tesla or any other car that is made in China.

I would buy the Hyundai Ioniq 5 AWD.

I with you on the Hyundai. I saw one of those in April by chance and I could not work out it was, until I went home and searched online. The design is really nice and Hyundai have come a long way in building cars. You know what you like coming from a BMW 335.
Telsa's are everywhere now. Everyone knows someone that has one and it's cool, but Ioniq 5, no one has seen them. Your Wife's reasoning seems shallow. Did I read that she would not even go to the dealership? What the hell? Hyundai's are a better bet than most of the euros out there.
It sounds like you have taken the time to consider the decision in detail. Go with your preference.

  • oh, MY.

  • Neither your son or your opinion matters if you want a peaceful household.

So, just get a model Y. Good shopping trolley.

We are looking at a Tesla to replace one of the cars for daily commute.

Tesla or big brother? They’ve got too much control over the vehicle for my liking.

  • I got a model Y coming but have a hyundai at home that I love as well. I think both are great cars. We ended with the model Y because of the larger storage space and the giant screen which the kids love. I just let the wife pick one since she is the primary user.

You are probably better off watching some YouTube videos or asking on whirlpool as opposed to asking here.

https://youtu.be/A64twNzBCeU here is a good one

    • Thanks Hodler and I did see the comparison too. The problem is all comparisons are Model Y RWD with I5 RWD. I am trying to decide between I5 AWD and MY RWD.
If Tesla was offering MY LR AWD at the same or similar price as I5 AWD, it would be a no brainer as the handling and space on Tesla is far superior and LR would offer the performance too. Would keep both Wife and I happy.
In US and UK, they don't even supply MY RWD anymore and the range starts with LR AWD. It is a shame that we are initially getting the inferior (if I may say that) base model offering.

  • Buy the better car (Hyundai) and go on ebay and get a few BMW badges.

  • keen to know which you end up choosing and why

    • To be honest. Still deciding. Took the Ioniq 5 Delivery last week and I love the car. Wife is still not convinced. She finally drove it, says it is better and luxurious than MY. However, she still wants the brand name. Got to compare MY and Ioniq 5 side by side last weekend with a friend who got MY delivered.
Our Tesla delivery has been delayed so expecting it early September.

  • Don't think Hyundai's are that subpar as a brand name. I'm getting a model y myself but it's def not a BMW Merc or Audi if you're talking about brand names?

But tbh, after having driven VW, Audi, BMW (no mercs) as well as Honda/Toyota/Lexus…my favourite and best exp has been Lexus. Maybe the next Lexus might get over the line in terms of name?

    • I agree with you. Haven’t owned a Lexus but colleague has one (IS350 2014) which now has 80K Kms. Not one rattle while most of the interior looks great for its age too even with kids. Performance is good too. Tech wise they are a bit behind though.
Also, agree on Hyundai being the upcoming brand which is no longer behind. It is a matter of convincing my wife at this stage.
