Gas and Charcoal Combo BBQ

Hi,

I am looking for a combo bbq that can have a tray for charcoal, like matador https://www.bunnings.com.au/matador-charcoal-tray-with-smoke… and Napoleon https://www.thebbqstore.com.au/p/napoleon-cast-iron-charcoal…

Looking at these, I am making the assumption that these two companies had made provisions to make the bbq withstand charcoal.

I am trying to see if there are other (cheaper alternatives that may have a tray as such.

Furthermore, I also found this that may do the same thing https://www.amazon.com.au/CHAR-PiT-Universal-Charcoal-Grill-… but I am not sure if I can put it in any gas BBQ.

I was hoping to find someone with a similar setup to share their knowledge and advice.

What's the purpose of such a setup? Steak searing? Low and slow smoking? As a backup for when you run out of gas?

Just to get an idea what would suit your requirements.

  • I would like to have a gas bbq when I want to do something quick and if I have friends over, have the charcoal with gas light the charcoal .

More like, I dont have the space and I want to combine both of these styles into one.

This video is what I am looking for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_barLfEx78 but I want to see if there are cheaper alternatives.

  • Probably just get a cheap Weber or alternative off gumtree; I had no success with the damn things but the actual thing is more effective

I looked into this about 2 years ago. Your options are
    - Char-Griller 165cm Black Double Dual Function Gas And Charcoal BBQ
    - Gas2Coal 3 Burner Barbeque

or any of the Matador 900 series, which are all built ins.

As long as you find a way to catch the charcoal ash underneath (mainly from falling into your burner), it should work. Your Amazon link definitely has the right idea in this regard.

I tried Macgyvering the Matador charcoal tray with a standard Matador BBQ and while it works, it gets annoying to clean up.

Having been through all this, I'd definitely get a kettle…..

    • Thanks for your input. I guess there is a reason why they are not as widely available
