MSY and Win7 OEM software

Has anyone else had trouble purchasing OEM software from MSY before?

Basically I am purchasing memory, case, PSU, Win7 and MS Office from MSY. CPU, motherboard and optical drive from UMart. SSD from Amazon. Have paid Amazon and Umart (both are being delivered) and was going to pay MSY on pickup.

MSY ring me up this morning and tell me that they wont supply the Win7 OEM unless I purchase both the CPU and HDD from them. I explain that they don't stock either of those two items that I want (Ivy Bridge i5-3570k and Crucial M4 256GB SSD) but she didn't care - had to purchase from them. I offered to bring in the receipts, nope didn't care. Claimed that she had a letter from MS saying that all three items had to be purchased from the same store. I asked to see the letter and she refused. I cancelled my whole order with that MSY store.

Are all MSY stores the same as this in refusing to supply OEM to system builders?

  • OEM from who ever you purchase the HDD imo.

    • Amazon. Except just checked and Amazon won't ship Win7 Home Premium OEM to Australia - would have to use a mail forwarder which just becomes painful and expensive. The whole reason for buying from the different places was to get the best possible kit for the dollars.

  • Check with MS.

My local MSY was fined $55000 last year for dodgy warranty etc deals.

    Shifty

    • Yep, just called MS. They confirmed that there is no requirement for all hardware or even a particular piece of hardware to be purchased from the place selling the OEM software. However it is for system building and the seller may need to be satisfied that a genuine system is being built which may be via the purchase of a HDD or motherboard. From reading the MS website once installed the licence is tied to the motherboard but can be moved to a new motherboard if the original one fails but not if it is just being upgraded.

However they did also say that individual stores may put in place their own restrictions so if MSY wanted to require all hardware be purchased from them to get the OEM software then that is up to MSY and MS would not intervene.

      • I think another option is to join the technet with all the MS software evaluations included. However, there is no business use.

  • Went to a second MSY store, here is the response they gave via email:

    Hi ######,

We can not sell the OEM win7 to you unless you get every component for a whole system which should at least includes CPU HDD RAM Motherboard and PSU

    • What about UMART? Do they have such a restriction?

You already bought a CPU and motherboard from them.

      • I was worried that UMart may have already shipped but caught them in time.

They were more than happy to add it in. With postage it costs a touch more but I'm just happy to have it coming.

        • +1

Glad you solved the issue then.

  • I have definitely had this issue before. I thought I could get buy with just buying a network card or something but they wanted me to buy an entire set of components.
