$10 minimum Bonus CB offer to interest me. Have a big haul of GC's with better CB rates.

  • +10

CR was $3 on $30, surely we can do better?

    • +4

That's because CR bonus deals are always > the SB bonus deals.

  • +9

    Cashrewards was better yesterday

  • +4

Inflation is 6.1% while Shopback only offers extra 3% on promo……

    https://theconversation.com/inflation-isnt-the-6-1-they-say-…

    • +8

TBF why would SB need to compensate the inflation? If you don't spend your money it will devalue by 5% anyways…

      • +2

I am not saying Shopback should compensate but just want to show how weak the promo is. Excluding Super Swap Card is a shxt move and it should not be encouraged.

        • +5

I'm not defending ShopBack as I think the offer isn't worth the effort. However, the inflation rate is for a year, whereas you can realise your 3% saving in weeks so comparing the "headline" rates of 3% and 6% is less than meaningful.

  • +1

    the usual Bezos card anyone

  • +1

At least this time they clearly exclude Super Swap rather than the BS of its OS.

  • +9

It's the start of the month, so unless you're in urgent need of a gift card, I suggest holding out until it hits $5 at the very least. SB are simply trying to hit their targets early by offering a weak deal.

  • +3

    thumbs down

  • Amazon.com.au, 2% cashback + $3 for $100, $5 cashback. yippee

  • +3

cashreward: $3 for $30 GC purchased = extra 10% cashback
shopback: $3 for $100 GC and no super swap.

    It's clear who wins.

    • +1

      And another 1% from cashreward.

    • How do I get for Amazon.com.au?

    • -1

      In this single instance, sure.

But SB do these deals way more often. If you use enough GCs then you'll find both to be good deals, with SB offering more discounts per month.

  • +1

I get 3% off amazon through MLC rewards anyway so yeah the Cash rewards one yesterday was great but this one not so much.

    • SB also have 2% on Amazon GCs, $5 back on a $100 GC isn't bad and still better than MLC.

  • +4

I didn't get it when it was $5 bonus. Why would I get this?? 😂

  • +3

I wonder how the high inflation environment affects these gift cards. If you're going to be sitting on the card for more than a year then inflation may negate any saving that you make buying the card.

    • +3

The opportunity cost for buying the gift card and not using for a year should be based on what you would have used the $100 for if you didn't buy the gift card. If left in your bank account instead, then it would be the after tax interest income you would receive. That would be significantly less than the inflation rate as well - and potentially <3% bonus you're getting by buying the gift card i.e. it might make sense even if you kept for a year. Anyway, the case varies for each individual

      • Interest rates are rising though. And many have mortgages.

        • +1

….the case varies for each individual

          • @bean_counter: OK. If you're in the part of the population who have a bank account or a mortgage then it's something to consider

            • +1

@dumdum2: Yes, but inflation will be unchanged irrespective of your decision to buy the gift card or not. $100 left in your bank account for the year unused (the same as unused gift card) will be similarly impacted by high inflation. The only thing that is different will be the use of the $100 during the year - either buying a gift card now and using in a years time or using $100 of your money in a year's time to buy what you would have used the card for. Either way whatever you buy will have been impacted by inflation in the meantime.
Whether there's high inflation or not, buying a gift card and holding it for more than a year would rarely make sense (unless there's enough of a discount/bonus). You could have earned interest on the $100 or saved interest by using for mortgage e.g. usually offset account best option so you can easily use if required. This is what I mean by the opportunity cost. Spending on a gift card that you don't use for a year is at the expense of the opportunity to use it for another purpose e.g. to earn or save interest or to buy something else that you can get the use and enjoyment of in the next 12 months.

    • +1

Always a good idea to tell the ATO about your gift card savings… everyone loves a bargain!

      • Do we have to pay taxes when we save money on gift cards now?

        • No, but for the good of your country, you probably want to? Am I right?

  • +1

Can i get a Shopback Home Swap Gift Card?

    • dunno, but i got the celebration swap gift card and it counted.

      • +1

        FYI, yeah it worked

  • +1

I'm feeling like Ozbargain peeps are spoilt with a growing sense of entitlement, SB and CR continually give bonuses which is essentially gauranteed savings. It can't be 10% all the time….is this now the expectation? Is 5% discount not enough? It's basically free money.

If you don't want it, keep scrolling and stop whinging.

    • -2

      Squeeky wheel gets the grease

      • +5

Actions speak louder than words. If demand for the offer is lower than ShopBack is targeting then they will consider improving subsequent offers. If you whinge but enough people take up the offer then the whingeing will fall on deaf ears!

        • +1

Some unaware people might not realise that this is a fairly unimpressive discount.

People who can't handle reading whinging should just stick to reading Jane Austin novels or something. Most annoying people on the internet.

          • +2

@dumdum2: I can handle the whingeing (I have 6 young grandchildren) but I think a more effective way of achieving change in this case is for people to not take up the offer. So yes, highlight it is unimpressive…… and encourage people to not take up the offer

    • -1

They also often stack with other giftcard promos, which sometimes works out better than 10%. If you need something now then all of these are giving you free money.

The whingey comments are getting boring

    • Honestly it’s ridiculous that Prime Day isn’t once a week. At least

  • +2

I’ll jump every time at 5% off Amazon

    • It is 5% if you purchase with 2% cash back and $3 bonus cash back. So you get $5 back for $100 gift card purchase. Or you want 5% + $3 bonus cash back?

      • The former

    • +1

You won't. You'll eventually go broke.

  • I've found the ampol vouchers are pretty good. With the standard 3% cashback and $3 cash back it ends up being ~12c/Litre (when feul is $2). When you stack this with the 4c/Litre Woolworths coupon it ends up being an ok deal. Mind you this was a much better deal when ampol gave 6% cash back and shopback had $10 cashback on a $100 voucher.

    • +1

Really? Even better than chopper fuel price?

      • Well at the end of the day, the chopper is stealing. At least you don't have to do anything dubious or devious to buy the Ampol vouchers.

      • I don't use the chopper, but I'll look into it. I suppose that would depend on how expensive your nearest ampol is mine is pretty cheap but some of them have pretty inflated prices.

      • what's the chopper fuel price?

    • Yeah I like the ampol vouchers. Especially with digital updates

  • +1

Thanks Op. purchased one. better than nothing :)

  • +1

    Purchased one, thanks

  • +1

I had 2x 10% cashback $50 gift card sitting in special last week and was awaiting this extra discount offer. now this extra arrived, but 2x10% off disappeared… a little unhappy

  • No point.

  • Is anyone taking bets on whether this deal will sell out before midnight? ;-)
