A Change to The Notification Dropdown Display?

Hi,

I noticed today that there has been a change with notifications. Previously, unread notifications appeared in a shade of blue on the menu, making them easily distinguishable from read notifications.

Now, the blue colouring appears to have been replaced with small, orange circles on the right of the notification item. See screenshot.

This seems like a very odd and poor change. It was very good before, and while it will be possible to get used to this change, it seems superfluous.

Agreed, not a fan of this change.
It was more functional too since you could dismiss the notification by clicking on the box and not the link. With the change, clicking anywhere in the box takes you to the item.

    • That function still exists, click the orange dot, it will mark the notification as read without opening the link.

Furthermore, if you click it again then it will make the notification unread, in case you wanted to go back to it later.

Thanks for that. It works but it's a lot harder to click a tiny dot compared to the entire box.

        • No probs. FYI clicking anywhere on the right hand side will have the same effect, you don't need to click right on the dot/circle.

Not as big area as the previous non-text box area, but you don't have to click right on the dot/circle for it to work.

@hamza23: but can you bring back the shade? make them stand out with different colour so we know which are new

Not quite anywhere, as the edges for example will still lead you to the link. Would be nice to have a much larger area without any vertical gaps.

@hamza23: The area is actually quite small, particularly on a monitor with a high resolution. You really have to position the cursor correctly instead of just being able to easily click like before. Would be grateful for a larger area or reverting to previous please.

agree. i want the old one
actually i prefer a bit darker., make them stand out more is better

    @scotty

  • should do talk to mod but oh well lets see

    • Should I have posted this there instead? I haven't posted about a site issue/question before.

its not really a post, its basically like a private message to the Moderator team. no one else will see.
unless you just want to ask others opinions - maybe mod will miss this thread thats all.

  • Maybe the change finally fixed read notifications showing up as unread, forcing you to click them to clear it?

Clicking the "Mark as Read" button was good enough for me, personally, to clear any unwanted/unneeded notifications.

Not a fan either. Orange dot is not as obvious as the grey background.

Furthermore, if you click it again then it will make the notification unread, in case you wanted to go back to it later.

    This is good though.

  • The orange dot is a step in the right direction. I would just make it a long rectangular bar thats as big as the clickable area for the circle (which is the entire vertical area)

It needs to be optimised for speed, its too hard to hit that tiny circle.

See here for example image: https://imgur.com/5Zv7N8X

    Its also invisible on mobile?

    • Its also invisible on mobile?

Oh, so not just me then

    • It should be easy to have some kind of orange circle/button for toggling read/unread, and keep the blue shade on unread notifications.

Please bring back the grey background I use dark mode so the grey background used to stand out but now it just blends In. Even in light mode its difficult to tell what's unread/read.

Good thing I’m not the only one that’s not liking the change. Possible we could get an option in our settings to bring back the old style?

If not, I’ll share a UserScript to revert the change.

bring back the old version ! please

Not a happy champ with the new version. Now I just see them all and then mark all as read.

Not liking the updated version, it's very hard to discern which notifications are unread / read - a little orange icon on the right is much harder to discern than a whole 'notification' being filled in a darker colour.

I suspect Ozbargain is trying to improve the click-through rate of notifications by removing the ability to mark notifications as 'read' by clicking on the notification, and instead replacing it with clicking through the notification.

I don't mind this - but usability is taking a hit when its hard to see what notifications are new, and how to easily mark these as read.

I am using the notifications less now - it feels like spam.

    • removing the ability to mark notifications as 'read' by clicking on the notification

You can still mark it as read (and now 'unread' again) without clicking through. See here.

I'm aware of this - but it honestly is a pain.

And it's not fully correct that clicking anywhere on the right hand side will achieve the same effect.

If you click on the very bottom right hand corner, it takes you to the deal link.

It feels like a user requires FPS gaming level precision, to click on that sliver of a pane on the right side. #firstworldproblems

Commenting to voice my hate for the new notification look, it's so much harder for me to differentiate between visited notifications now, before the whole notification had a dark grey background colour. Please bring back the ability to click anywhere on the blank space for a notification to mark as read.
