Best Value NAS

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering what would be the best value NAS for around the $300 mark,

I currently have a Buffalo Linkstation pro QUAD which I payed about $250 for, it's been good and I haven't Really had any issues with it, though I think it could be a bit faster.

A friend of mine is now looking at getting a NAS and I want to recommend him a good one,

I'm tossing up as to what is better between the,

Buffalo Linkstation pro quad (~$250)

and the

Netgear RND4000 ReadyNAS 4 bay (~$279)

Any other suggestions are also wecome.

Thanks

Brad.

  • I have a Buffalo linkstation duo and its a cracker.
Very handy with the built in torrent client.

  • Transmission Torrent client is available for the Netgear.

    There's always the N40L…

  • It will mainly be used for storage for a media pc and yeah the N40L does seem good but I think hes after a plug and play setup.

So it seems there isn't much separating these two then?

  • You might want to check out the QNAP TS-412 II here http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/view/EOFY_Sale_NAS as per http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71692.

  • +1

    Microserver

Anything else is mad dumb son.

Microserver is a lot more complex and generally more expensive than most "all-in-one" NAS boxes. There are numerous reasons why to choose a NAS over a Microserver.

Cost is the first thing, but remember there's ease of use, no need to faff around with operating systems, updates, learning how to install and use software, adding graphics cards, keyboards, screens, etc, etc.

Microserver is GREAT if you are a geek… but not when you just need to do simple stuff like store some files on your network, run a Torrent Client, use FTP, Samba, DLNA, etc, etc.

      • all i did was add 4 drives, a usb stick and freenas… took me longer to install a netgear piece of shit with their registering and cloud crap i didn't want

cifs, ftp was just ticking the relevant radio buttons

    • I'm assuming you mean buying an already complete microserver?

Pretty silly IMO, I built my file server myself and its 10x better and has a lot more capacity for hdd's etc.

      • power consumption

        • There are plenty of low power CPU's around for example from AMD's fusion lineup.

You can get a dual core system with 15-20W power usage if power is your concern.

        • yeah actually you're right

everyone who bought a Microserver is really just wasting their time and they should build a pc

you can get a mad pc for $240 or so and so simple too
