$31 each from Amazon UK last march…

  • Cancelled my order for 2 cheaper internal ones (trying to save money) and got these for a couple of dollars more.

You trying to save money by spending more?

Interpretation: @singingwolf was trying to save a lot of money by using internal ones outdoors, but now these are only slightly more, that is a false economy as the outdoor ones are only slightly more now so the saving may actually work out to be false due to unsuitability, wear and tear, etc etc etc

Everyone knows the average OzBargainer sits in their computer chair for hours barely breathing, let alone moving. Better get one of those new mmWave sensors instead so it can detect an eye twitch when someone comments an opposing opinion.

@Tacooo: Can it detect my brain malfunctioning when reading a jv comment?

@XeKToReX: Probably need a CO2 sensor for the heavy sigh you let out when you read them.

    • Where?

    • You don't want to use the indoor ones outside anyway. Outdoor ones are water sealed and a bit more thermally sealed (good for preventing false detections and battery issues).

      • I have indoor sensor sitting outside on my driveway for almost two years now… no issues

      • I have an indoor Hue motion sensor in my (internal access) garage and I've noticed it often won't detect motion (even a hand waving right in front of it) on cold nights when the garage is very cold inside. Is this why? Should I be using an outdoor motion sensor instead?

        • Yep. To both.

If you can be bothered, I've heard of people 3D printing cases for some of the cheaper motion sensors. I've also heard of people sealing the cases with silicon or plastidip.

I've got a couple of Aqaras outdoors (but in covered areas) and they have worked fine for a few months.

All that said, if these were just a bit cheaper I'd buy them - the Hues are utterly bulletproof.

    • Just don't use Sonoff ones outside. When it gets too cold the battery voltage dips too low and they fall offline (although this may be the case for any that use a button-cell battery).

      • Damn literally just put a sonoff undercover outside..I'll see how it goes.

      • My experience with sonoff sensors generally is poor, not so much with them dropping off the network as false positives (sometimes lasting for hours). I set one up on my shed guttering though and yeah - it failed after a couple of months, I just assumed it was water ingress but might have been the cold.

None of my outdoor aqaras have had the same issue, I have two under the eaves and two in the shed.

  • I didn't need 2 sensors, so I added 1 sensor and a $3.90 packet of Blutak to get the 15% off the order. Needed blutak anyway!
