    Thanks OP!

The brand is good but expensive. The balm works well for my kids eczema when he’s had it in the past. Never tried the mask looking forward to it.

    • Hi, which balm did you use? My daughter has pretty bad eczema and I'm still trying all kinds of remedies.

Our eczema is related to an egg allergy which we’re gradually egg laddering for (increasing tolerance). But he’ll break out if we go too hard on the challenges and this helps. I know another mum who finds it helpful too. I find we have to be pretty consistent with it but when we are his skin is lovely.

        • We haven't actually found out what she is allergic to, it's probably genetic cos I have very mild eczema and never need special care.

          • @wsqwin: Yeah I don’t know if it’s always related to a specific allergen. I do notice though even if we’re off eggs if we change his body wash (we use Hamilton gentle wash) he’ll get a rash too. My husband kept trying to substitute for cheaper stuff (another typical cheap OzBargainer 🤣) when we ran out but he’s converted now that he’s seen that being consistent keeps his skin good. The other product we used for a bit was Epaderm as recommended by allergy specialist. They were pretty unimpressed that we hadn’t been doing anything for bubs eczema and he was bleeding from scratching himself on the day we went to the clinic. This really thick and greasy so I prefer the Avene, but Epaderm in the tub is what’s usually recommended and cheaper https://superpharmacyplus.com.au/epaderm-ointment-3-in-1-500…

        • Our son was allergic to egg white, but could still have the yolk. Something to do with less protein in the yolk which makes it less allergenic. Have you tried that?

          • @Munki: Yeah we’ve actually worked our way up the ‘egg ladder’ so he can now have very well cooked egg (white and yolk combined) if it’s been cooked at a high temperature. Still reacts if a cake has been cooked at a lower temperature. Apparently egg allergy is super common and most kids grow out of it, which is great. We’re mostly pumped about being able to eat takeaway fried rice and noodles as a family without the poor thing getting into an itchy mess 😀

Unfortunately we also have a nut allergy, which can cause anaphylaxis and are told he’s very unlikely to grow out of.

            • @morse: Yep, unfortunately anaphylactic reactions are not likely to be outgrown, but I think the severity can decrease. Still wouldn't be worth the risk, of course. Having one person in the family who has allergies really can make eating out tricky, and when they have reactions, you feel so guilty. Good thing though, is once they're 2 years old, they can start having antihistamine to help relieve that reaction.

Nut is definitely tricky to tackle. Also, one of the issues I've found with allergies is that contact allergy and reactions when ingesting can be very different. So whilst a skin prick test is useful to help identify allergens, they might not actually react when they ingest it as a food.

Want to know also which balm u use. wsqwin: Mine is very bad too. Ended up in ER in the past. Does your daughter see a dermatologist? Undertreatment was our issue.
edit: a google search shows a lower price

        • Hey Steph, we haven't seen a specialist yet cos she is only 21 month old, GP suggested we wait a bit more and use thick cream. Her eczema just comes and goes, we couldn't figured out how to prevent it.

          • @wsqwin: Have you gotten a skin prick test for your child? I remember we got one for our son after 1 but before 2 and found out he's allergic to a range of things (milk, peanuts, various other tree nuts, cat and dog, egg, etc). He has since grown out of most of those (fresh milk and pretty sure he will never grow out of peanut allergy but thankfully not anaphylactic). If she's prone to react to things, might be worth finding out.

            • @Munki: Did he outgrow the tree nuts? Ours is just allergic to almonds, specialist said to expect not to grow out of it. Still hopeful though…

              • +1

@morse: I don't think he's grown out of the nuts, but we haven't gone back for a test in a few years now. We just try and avoid anything that will give him a reaction. Not worth the discomfort he goes through. His dairy allergy is probably the only thing we kept pushing and that has thankfully improved. He still can't have fresh milk. but can have yoghurt, cheese in foods (so long as it's been cooked).

            • @Munki: We did ask about it to our GP, but he said she will probably grow out of it later.

We will talk to the Dr again, thanks a lot!

@wsqwin: No one wants unsolicited advice on the internet, so feel free to ignore. But we took our bub to the public allergy clinic at 6months and they were amazing and free! Did a skin prick test and all the education, scripts for epipen (for the nut allergy). This is in Queensland.

    • Yep, tried all the big brands but this one was the most successful with our kids eczema. We use their "Avene XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cream" as a daily moisturizer which we found easier to apply compared to the Balm. Pretty pricey but often goes on sale at Chemist Warehouse.
