Should I Post a Targeted Offer as a Deal?

So I just got a reasonable targeted offer - a $50 gift card in return for a minimum $250 spend at a loathed retailer with a particular credit card. Should I post it as a deal?

  • Hurry so you don't end up posting it as a duplicate :)

  • If that loathed retailer is Apple, then yes.

  • Why not?

    • It was 43 mins after OP's post and the deal post.

Got to be quick around here… Act now, ask questions later.

It gives interested people a heads up to check if they're eligible or not.

      Can't they read their email?

Some may not read every single e-mail they get or may not have received it or sent straight to junk folder or haven't had a chance to yet etc.

i'm more likely to read my emails than every single ozbargain post.

  • I appreciate the heads up re targeted offers. Most my promo emails go to a semi spam email address that I just skim. There’s also things in apps, where there’s a decent chance I won’t look at the app in the promo period unless prompted, eg Uber eats, various fast food ones.

Posting it allows people who got targeted to discuss the offer

  • Another reason to post decent targeted offers is that we can then have a history of such events. For example, if a retailer/bank posts a similar deal every 6 months, it's possible in 6 months time a similar deal will occur.

A targeted deal such as $50 gift card now + a known sale in 3 months time (eg EOFY/Black Friday/etc) + cash back could lead to the lowest price.

    I'm uncomfortable with targeted deals.

For one thing a large proportion, if not majority, of viewers are ineligible for the "deal".

For another thing there's an additional cost involved: that of becoming a member of whatever program is required for eligibility. How much is that extra program? They are hidden costs that make the deal more expensive than the amount on the ticket.

That being said - some discretion can probably be applied. There may be a good reason to publicise a targeted deal.

Thanks for spelling out your fantastic thought process

  • Niche products probably not..

Common among target audience such as zip, perks, Amex etc probably more suitable
