Best Place to Buy USD Tomorrow (Melbourne South Eastern Suburbs)

I am travelling tomorrow and I have been very disorganised. I thought i could walk around Melbourne city after work and find places to buy USD from. A few places were closed for the day….but most were actually permanently shut down! I leave tomorrow afternoon and wanted to know if anyone knows a place i can buy USD from in the south eastern suburbs? I am after 5000 USD. Looking online, it looks like i should have placed the order 2 weeks ago to get it this week. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My general recommendation is NOOOOOOO don't buy foreign cash abroad (e.g. US cash in Australia, or Australian cash in the USA). You'll always get a terrible rate.

If you've got a credit card seriously consider getting cash out at a foreign ATM (but put your credit card into credit first or you'll be hit with punitive interest from the day you withdraw).

cash out from credit card is a big no no, even with above limit balance, most has atm withdrawal fee and hefty surcharge, better load it up on citibank, ing, wise or a couple of other neobank and withdraw from overseas.

Head to a ATM when you land, take out the money. Problem solved.

Not an option in the country I’m visiting. I need cash.

Strange…. You can't get cash out at the airport? Ok then, go to one of the many foreign currency exchange companies at the airport and get the cash out before you get on the plane.

Have you been to Colombia lately ?

Have you? Tell me about how you went carrying $5k USD in cash around.

  • $5k isn't even a lot of money. Just go to your Big4 bank or post office and swap it, the difference of 2-3% is nothing worth the hassle especially since you left this so late.

Take the equivalent in AUD and exchange it there?
