Interesting: Asus Zenbook Fold Laptop

Hi Guys, Currently I haul around 2 laptops - 17.3 gaming laptop or home/hotel use (way excessive) and 11 inch (old) macbook air (just run a couple of tabs on chrome).
It seems like asus are actually going to start releasing the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold Laptop.
This is a 17inch folding screen laptop that folds down to 12.5inchs.

I am really tempted to get this laptop. It certainly would make traveling easier, which seems to be a bigger and bigger priority for me (road warrior).
Sure it is expensive (around $2k) but I would probably keep it for 3/4 years or so.

So 17inch the hotel room, 12.5 folded at the coffee shops for meetings (I go every day, meetings/get out of the house).

I guess mostly worried about mechanism and slight knocks and dings (especially when traveling).
I don't play any games really so I'm not worried about the specs that much.

Any thoughts?
tbh I feel the 17 laptop is too heavy and the macbook underpowered (though to be fair I actually don't do much laptop work when Im out and about - just youtube vids).
I guess the other option is a 13 inch windows tablet (say refurb) with a portable 17.3 screen…..
pretty unexcited by mac laptops tbh and I could potentially hook up 2 monitors to a windows tablet (so ipad is out). I really like the magic keyboard tho.

Please give any opinion, especially if you vote.

  • If you replace your laptop every year or two, it might be okay. If the screen is anything like Samsung's phone screens, it won't last anywhere near as long as a traditional laptop. Although you won't be opening and closing it as many times a phone.

  • I've had nothing but bad experiences with ASUS notebooks (their motherboard and GPUs are fine), I don't imagine this thing could last 3/4 years. Just get a sub-1KG notebook and a USBC travel monitor to go with it when you need the extra real estate.

  • I have a macbookpro 16" with M1 cpu. I am extremely impressed with its battery life and the fact that it never gets hot. The only negative is that it's heavy. I also have the previous 16" intel model (2019?). The battery on the intel one lasts about 2-3 hours, the M1 one can last 8hrs++ easily. Ignoring the longer battery life, it's really nice not to have a toaster on my lap.

Nowadays though in 3 years, your laptop will start to get old, 5 years… hmm. Having said that I have a 11 year old macbook air that's still going. I've replaced its battery twice, and keyboard once - bought the parts from ebay.

I find it interesting that you think macbook is underpowered.

  • Looks very, very cool but this is the sorta tech that I'd wait a generation or 2 to make sure it's reliable before buying.
