Kids Ear Protection for Concert

Taking our kid to see KISS; it’ll be his first concert: but he’s under 10. Any need/recommendations for earmuffs or a waste of money? Thanks

I'd head to Bunnings, they have cheapies starting from $9, and kids ones for $20, the cheapies would probably be fine if they fit ok, certainly better than nothing… If you're really concerned double up with earplugs as well…

$3 for the next 5 gigs. What more do you need?

      • I second this - I have pretty bad tinnitus and use these when I go to concerts.

        • I used these for gigs for years. Can buy them at most bars that have live music too.
These days I use these which are really good and less wasteful than the disposables.

Obviously, only really useful if you're going to loud events regularly, which I do.

I wouldn't use ear plugs for kids.

They are too big for under 10s so will be uncomfortable.

The ear muffs are much more practical.

        • I was thinking much the same, I'm also not sure how good adult sized earplugs would be in kiddy sized ear canals.. (they may be ok if you roll them between your fingers to compress them a bit before inserting)

@FLICKIT: Maybe I have tiny ear canals, but if I do this with the foam ones, they starting hurting shortly after. When I take the ear plugs out, my canals feel numb/on fire. I think it's from the pressure of the foam trying to expand.

I just use the silicone/swimming ones instead, probably doesn't provide as much noise reduction.

I can split each one of these in half to get 6 pairs.

@John Kimble: I prefer the tethered flanged type over the foam ones, I use them on the motorbike and in the tinny, easy to clean:

When I can use muffs I prefer them, chainsawing, tractor, brushcutter, angle grinding, and such… They say plugs cut out more of the sound but I feel decent muffs work better than plugs in general..

      • These style of earplugs ( cheap foam ) just don’t work for me I.e. they tend to loosen and fall out no matter how I fit them.

You're a good Dad. Looking after your kids hearing can't be understated.

    Tinnitus sucks big time.

Son's friend: friigin awesome dude that would have sounded amazing

Son: yeah nah bro they sounded all muffled.

        lol

I saw a baby wearing ear muffs at a Wiggles concert!

At least the parents wont have to leave the concert because the kid cant handle how loud it is… I can imagine KISS will crank it up to 11, lol

      • Haha yeah, I imagine he will want to take them off time to time but 2 hours or so might be a bit punishing, he will work it out with the muffs!

      • they sounded all muffled

That's not how ear muffs work. They attenuate sound… some frequencies better than others… but don't result in sound being more muffled.

Actually - my ears distort above a particular volume. I used to wear ear plugs into nightclubs - and it meant I could hear the music cleanly; take out the ear plugs and it's all distorted.

I used to wear ear plugs into nightclubs

          Watch out ladies

          • @Muzeeb: Aww, you cannot feel that threatened, surely?

I can still hear. Ain't no shame in that.

    • I’ve got it a little bit I think from piano playing for years which is kinda weird

I've taken my 10 year old to quite a few gigs, the foamies are perfect, you can get smaller sizes from chemist warehouse which are for kids/smaller ear canals.

She used them plenty of time with no sore ears complaints. Also, I imagine a 10yo will be a bit self conscious wearing those big ear muff things out and about and will just complain or refuse to wear them.
