Things to do in Auckland

Hi everyone :)

I'm heading off to Auckland from June 17-24. Not sure what to do over there (as I just jumped on cheap flights) and I really don't have much planned! Any ideas for must-do's?

FYI I'm in my early 20's and I've heard good things about Rotorua so I plan on visiting there for probably one full day.

Thanks sincerely for your input!

  • If you like outdoor activities, allow yourself more time in Rotorua instead Auckland :-)

  • I havce heard Bay of Plenty or Pahia areas are good (both north of AKL)

  • Thanks heaps for the suggestions guys! I'm a bit concerned that outdoor activities might not be as good seeing as its winter though… :( Any more ideas? I've really gotta get this trip sorted!!! Thankyou all sincerely and apologies for my lack of knowledge :)

    • +2

Sky tower is something you might enjoy, go up and jump on the glass while looking down, good fun!

Also, my uncle took me and my cousins to the waterfront (They live there, I was stopping over on my way back to Aus) on the weekend, and there was alot there. Most of the stuff is left over from the RWC, and looks to still be being used.

If you wanted to head in the other direction (North) you could go up to cape rianga, which would be a 2-3 day trip if you hired a car, you can see the 2 seas meeting there and the famous lighthouse and distance sign, and on your way up or back or both you can see tane mahuta, which is basically a massive kauri tree, and a travel guide book/brochure/app would be able to show you other things to see and do up there.

By the way, Bay of Plenty is SOUTH of Auckland :).

Good luck, and remember to have a good feed of nz meat (not in a gay way, unless that is what you are into) while you are there, because it is 100x better than anything you buy here!

      • You are amazing. Thanks so much for your great suggestions :)

I'll make sure I check out Cape Rianga and Bay of Plenty…and NZ meat haha (not in a gay way).

        Thanks again shaw!

  • Any other ideas guys? :)

  • Rent a car and drive down to Rotorua, check out the geysers, mud pools and thermal springs - it'll stink like rotten eggs but you'll get used to it and it's deff worth it. Havent seen anything like it in Aust. You could relax at the polynesian spa too.

Maybe do one of those Maori culture tours if you like exploring diff cultures.

I think half way between Auckland and Rotorua, theres this glow worm cave in Waitomo - its very pretty.

  • Check out the NZ Navy…. one ship

    • I think it broke down, all of 1/2 a ship now!

  • You could go up One Tree Hill (which really should be re-named to No Tree Hill since they chopped down the tree). You'll get a nice 360 degree view of Auckland.

The bars down in Viaduct is a nice place to chill out at night.

You could always catch a ferry from there across to either Rangitoto or Waiheke island for a day trip.

Oh, and if you're around the city there is a red bus that goes around the city and it's free :)
