Travel to Europe, Hotels, Travel Insurance and Travel Sim-Cards

Hi guys,

I am going to Europe in Nov.
After reading notes, compared ideas, I decided to book my flight tickets for following destinations:

Athens: 2x nights
Santorini 3x nights
Rome 5x nights
Barcelona 4x nights.

Now it's time to book hotels, Travel Insurance and to buy travel Sim-cards.

Hotel:
Could you please let me know in those cities which areas are the best to book a hotel ? Please when you are suggesting think of easy access to public transport, cleanliness, safety with reasonable pricing. Any deals, discount, offers are appreciated. Thank you.

Travel insurance:
Any current deals? Or I should wait till a good deal come up?

Travel Sim-cards:
looking for 2x Sim-cards. Sim-card with minimum of 70GB data (each) and it would be great o have unlimited text and call.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
Thanks.

    Welcome to Oz Travel Agents

    • Just taking all my chances.

  • This might be best posted to the trip advisor forums for each city. You’ll get a lot more detailed and up to date information than here.

    • Hi Jjjaar, Good idea, thanks.

That's alot of places to visit considering you are going for 2 weeks. For example the two nights you have in Athens will be eaten up by the 3 hour ferry to and from Santorini not including the time taken to get to the port in Athens. Then you have presumably 2-3 internal flights which will eat up half a day each.

When you arrive at Santorini you will have to figure out how to get from the port at the bottom to the oia at the top about 5km away. We hired a car.

the 5 nights in Rome is a solid. We stayed at the Marriott in the outskirts and had the hotel shuttle drop us off near the Vatican everyday. Ended up being significantly cheaper.

Also unless you plan on using GPS alot or torrenting abroad 70gb each of data each seems like a lot for 2 weeks. You could easily get away with 20-30gb whilst leveraging hotel and public wifi.

    • Thanks Vodkaman,
We booked a flight to travel from Athens to Santorini. So, hope that makes things easier and we can have enough time in hand… Thank you for suggesting the hotel "Marriott in the outskirts" will definitely check this one out…
about the Sim-card, not sure really but I love soccer and I am planing to watch a few world cup games while I am there. Hence, don't want to risk it of not having Hotel Wi-Fi etc.

      • It's the Rome Marriot Park Hotel for reference. They have a free daily shuttle that takes you to and from the centre of Rome.

  • I'll post a longer reply shortly but what exactly are you visiting/sight seeing?

I personally found Rome a little average (and I've heard similar anecdotes from western travellers). You could do 2-3 nights and head over to Florence/Tivoli.

Unsure if you're familiar with travel but 3 nights = restful and 2 nights is a little hasteful.

Travel insurance: use your credit card(s). You usually have to book return flights to/from Australia (each way is likely valid) for the included complimentary insurance.

Sim cards: 70GB data? Hah. PS. Hopefully you'll be too busy to need any more than a few gig of data and not sitting in a hotel room/Airbnb streaming Netflix (which you can use their wifi for).

  • Not all credit card insurance provides covid cover so read the PDS
