Looking at Finally Upgrading My S8 - Looking for Advice

Hi all,

Finally getting around to upgrading my S8 and was hoping to get some feedback/recommendations. Price limit is $800 AUD and what I'm looking for mainly in the phone is good processing, screen resolution and battery life as my main uses are watching videos, music and reading (emails and ebooks). Not phased by the camera as I barely take pictures.

Currently have been looking at the following
- Nothing Phone 1
- Pixel 6/6a
- Poco X4 Pro 5g
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro

Cheers :)

Samsung A73 has a decent screen for the price (Same as the S22+ I believe), ok speakers, expandable storage & 5000mh battery. Currently on sale for $599 at JB or $549 from Samsung with $50 newsletter code. Main downside would be lack of wireless charging.

Bought two for dad and he's had no complaints, I was honestly surprised by just how good the display on these phones was, would have bought one for myself if the camera wasn't so poop.

    • Had been eyeing up that and a mate at work has been showing me his A52s. Think the only thing that's making me hold off on the A73 (as well as other like it) is the no headphone jack. I'm not a massive fan of the wireless earbuds pricing haha

Generally the S20 FE is considered a worthy upgrade as it still has features you're used to

I like mine, except it had an audio fault which was only fixed by turning off the Atmos (annoying), and I cbf putting it in for warranty

    • Interesting, heard this is also a lot better than the 21FE as well

Geez sticking with the s8 for this long
    I'm impressed
My s9+ started to get slow so I went to a s22+ and its been great

S8 is lovely, with a growing family I'd recommend the RS6 wagon…. al the creature comforts you're acustom plus space, space, space.

I am on the S8 too, I was considering buying the A32 from some days ago (around $200), it kind of had everything that I wanted but the difference between it and S8 was not that big.

Because I use phones for a long time I am considering the Samsung Galaxy XCover6 Pro for the replaceable battery, I also tend to buy a rugged case for my phones anyway and this should be rugged enough without a case. It should be around the price you are looking for.

I am also still using the galaxy S8, I need an upgrade with an expandable SD card slot.
F*** Samsung and Apple for removing them, there is absolutely zero excuse, especially when the sd card goes in the sim slot.

    • S20 fe has expandable memory

  • Could always get an EV, pull the band aid off … perfect upgrade from S8

  • I got excited when I saw this post as I thought you were talking about an Audi S8! Nope, just another boring phone upgrade.

    Poco F3 8gb/256gb

    • Is it worth the extra $100ish over the Poco X4 Pro 5g? Can grab the 8gb 256gb of that at the moment for just under $400

I would say definitely worth the extra. What isn't worth the extra, is the F4.
I have the F3, and it does everything you want and more.

        • Will defs look into it!

Edit: Realise there is no phone jack on the F3 which is a slight turnoff

I managed to get a full refund on the price of my S8 a few weeks ago, thanks to the ACCC. (https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/samsung-australia-to-p…)

Won't help you, as you've been using your phone this whole time, however it might help other people whose Samsung phones stopped working after being submerged in water. I contacted Samsung a couple of weeks ago and told them that my S8 stopped working back in the day, after I took it in the pool. At the time, I attempted to get it repaired under warranty and was told that the warranty didn't cover water damage. Therefore, since the court has ruled that they misled customers, I requested a refund which they ultimately agreed too.

    • What was the process here?

I still currently use my phone but it has charging issues, and they've said "send it in for a refund or replacement".

Hard to send in without the replacement phone haha - can I switch for literally any phone like a flip haha? And after sending in, how quick was the process to get the refund? TIA

      • Was easy for me as I didn't have the phone anymore, so didn't need a replacement, just wanted my money back from the original loss.

I just emailed their generic support and went from there. They needed all the proof of purchase stuff and then once the refund was approved by head office (about a week), took 21 days for the money to appear in my account.

        • Hang on - had you sent your phone back to them previously?

Or could I try my chances trying to argue I can't send it in, and still get my refund?

Thanks so much for the info, I really appreciate it.

          • @snoopydoop: I had thrown the phone out years ago. It stopped working within the original warranty period, however at the time, Samsung refused to cover the repairs, so I cut my losses and moved on.

Then thanks to the ACCC action and the court ruling, I just told Samsung that if they had of acted legally back then, then I would have been entitled to a repair, replacement or refund. So I asked for the phone to be refunded retrospectively.

If I was you, I would get them to agree to a replacement or refund in writing first, and then send it back.

            • @karnage1020: Yeah they had mentioned I'm entitled to a refund, but just finding it hard to go a while without a phone while I send it in.

Given your case I might try and insist that they just offer the refund without returning, and see how I go with that. Thank you so much!
