Holiday Idea - 1 Week in Nov

Lazy OP alert.
I am planning 1 week vacation in mid-November with my partner.
Looking for some ideas on the destination.

  • QLD - Have been to Gold Coast, Whitsundays, Cairns/Green Island etc in the past so if domestic looking for something else.
  • Fiji - skeptical of the weather, but would love to hear anyone who has travelled in Monsoon
  • Bali - Foot & Mouth a risk?

No idea where you live.. but WA?

    • Is end of November good enough for catching Wildflowers? WA is a great recommendation but was wondering if I leave it for future and visit during end of Sep for peak of Wildflower season.

Thanks for heads up. My school had a bus trip to Uluṟu, one August, and it rained a fair bit. The wildflowers were amazing. We went from red dust to red mud.

    • There are all sorts of risks no matter where you go
Usually risks are higher when travelling overseas.
But people are travelling everywhere at the moment so just go anywhere you like so long as you meet the COVID19 requirements.
Plenty of people travel to Fiji for Christmas/school holidays with the kids so that timining is not an issue

And whats wrong with going back to one of your favourite locations?

if i had a week holiday, i'd just spend it browsing ozbargain.

    • +11

That's the plan, just not in my house. From a hotel room or at a new beach :)

I've done Fiji in Nov, it was great, though YMMV.

    • On an avg how many sunny v rainy days?

      • They were all sunny, was there 8 or 9 days I think.

      • Rainy season in tropical countries is not what most people expect. It is mostly just an afternoon shower a couple of days per week with the rest of the day being warm and sunny. You shouldn't let it stop you travelling anywhere and because of the misconceptions it is usually much cheaper to travel/stay at that time of year.

Overland Track in Tassie. May still be a bit of snow around!

    • OMG. Had no idea of this. Before I could decide if we are fit enough for this, found out that one needs to book slots $200 per head and are already sold out for my choice of dates.

      • +1

overland trek is easy - its designed that way.

my parents in their 60's did it, I wouldn't call them fit, they said it was too easy for them.

for comparison I did Frenchman's cap with my dad and he found it too hard - completed it but it was at his peak ability. on the other hand I found it easy - I am only 32, again not anything extraordinary regarding fitness, but I have a high skill level and lots of experience regarding multi day trekking.

        • thanks for sharing

You really need to book the OLT on July 1st when they open the bookings for the year, people do cancel and spots open up but it's not easy to get a booking after that… I think they have a wait-list now and I bet that full also, lol…

November is generally ok but you can get snow all year round, early Dec 2020 there were blizzard conditions all through there and the rescue helicopter had to pluck a few people out, that's not all that unusual, lol (all part of the adventure as long as you're prepared)…. I did it early Nov 2020, started with a fairly warm day, then a fine mild day, then windy rainy days through the middle, blizzard conditions up Mt Ossa, the second last night was snowy, then a hot day to finish, about what you'd expect for Tassie… It's not particularly hard but it's quite a long slog if you're not accustom to 6-7 day walks… You really need good appropriate gear for it though…

I enjoyed the 4 day Frenchmans Cap walk more than the Overland Track I think, the second day between the huts is great, I did this in quite bad weather, lots of rain, I think that just made it better, rain in a rain forest just enhances the whole experience…. There's a booking system for Frenchmans also but a lot of people dont book, it's strongly advised to book but not compulsory I believe…

    Logan Qld.

    • Have a spare bed to rent do you?

    • Great movie.

    Foot & Mouth a risk?

Take it from me, you’re unlikely to catch F&M

    • +2

Hehe. Just meant don't want to carry the virus and threaten our industry.

If you have 10-11 days and want something relaxing you can take a cruise to Vanuatu / New Caledonia. Mystery Island and Isle of Pines are magical. There are some adventurous excursions you can do at each destination if you're that way inclined, or just relax on the beach, swim, snorkel etc.

    • Are those running now after reopening?

  • +3

Maybe look at one of the ski resorts in the off season. They usually have trails and mountain bike runs. Also, if you look at something like Mt Buller, there are wineries and restaurants around the area.

Might want to see what is open when.

    • Thanks. Intersting.

    Singapore
    Bali
Or if you want to escape the heat new Zealand

    • Thanks

      • Also foot and mouth is only a risk if you consider getting freaky with a certain sex

        • +1

What are you talking about? It lives on surfaces and in soil.

    • Singapore is a day trip. 2 at best.

      • +2

        Someone hasn't properly done singapore

        • -1

I did a lot of that in a 19 hour layover day walking around a few years back. Will do a lot more of it on subsequent layovers but wouldn't waste a whole week stopped there because it is a stop on most of my holiday routes.

          • +2

            @Mechz: It's also a destination ;)

          • +1

@Mechz: That is a valid point. Singapore is always pushed back as it will be a "transit" vacation in some holiday some day.

        • Thanks for sharing the thread.

Outback Qld is also great for a holiday - Charleville, Longreach, Winton!

    Check it out.

Staycation. Binge watch all streaming shows each day while eating Ben and Jerry straight from the tub.

    • Don't mind buying a VR headset and vacationing in the Metaverse like a crazy person.
Btw Any unique show recommendations to Binge?

      • The first season of the new Game of Thrones show, House of Dragon, should be finished by November.

        • Any PG ones?

          • +1

@archieduh: I have been liking For All Mankind, season 3 just finished recently. Alternate history kind of thing, starts with Russia landing on the moon first and goes from there.

I'd try the Grampians in Victoria. Lots of nice walks and drives.

    • Thanks. Looking…

What do you like? NSW south coast is great but if you arent into beaches then not really. NZ has mountains and stuff, outdoor activities if you like them. Lots of desert tours in Australia.

    • I like everything and anything about travel. Just no shared bathrooms.
Anything particularly suitable for mid-November weather that you suggest?

      • +1

NSW south coast waters will be a bit cool in November so probably you need a wetsuit if you want to any swimming. But you can look at places like Depot Beach or Pebbly Beach as a bit of an isolated hideaway with some hiking and beach stuff and nature and add in a few trips up the road to MIlton/Mollymook for some fancy restaurants and take some surfing lessons. You will have to rent a house or a NSW Parks hut (if available) so no shared bathrooms, but there are shared pizza ovens at Depot Beach.

If you do Fiji, go to Mamanuca Islands. Prices are a bit more but it's in a rain shadow so only gets 1-2hr rain per day while the rest of the island gets rain all day.

I went there over New Years last year and we had the odd storm (fun to watch) while we heard the Coral Coast had non-stop rain.

    • Whoa. How do you find out such interesting details?

      • +2

Mostly Tripadvisor and wanting to go there anyway cause staying on a tiny island appeals to me.

      Thanks.
PS: sorry about the FBI raid

Noosaville. Spend the time by Noosa river, hire a boat, go fishing and catch some annoyingly small brim, walk the Noosa headland with the thousands of other tourists…

    • Thanks. Added to the list.

Qld Rail is doing buy one/get one on the trains to Charleville, Longreach and Mount Isa from November 1 to March 31. Something very relaxing about travelling by train.

    • Interesting. Having a look.

    Ayres Rock

    • Too hot for Nov?

      • +2

        Too hot always

As an alternative, when I was young I walked Hoddle street from Clifton Hill to St Kilda, while plugged with some boofing spirits. It was a wild week of walking with Johnny Walker.
