Spyderco Ladybug 3 Salt H1 - Plain Blade - Yellow $119.22 Delivered @ Knives Online via Catch

82

I bought this in January from Catch for $111.95, so not the lowest price ever but not bad at 5% off.

Very useful to have on your desk for opening packages or as a fidget toy, and the H1 steel is certainly nice.

I'm quite surprised this is the first Spyderco deal on Ozbargain (or at least I couldn't find any in my search).

Sold by Knives Online on Catch Marketplace. This may be an older version of the knife, as seems to be the case with some Knives Online deals.

Doesn't look like you can buy it on Amazon AU. You could get the Ladybug 3 version from KnifeCenter in the US for USD$56.35, total with shipping would be USD$79.57, so probably about AUD$113.72.

Blurb:
H-1 does something no other blade steel can, It remains 100% rust free and it actually holds a sharp cutting edge. Spyderco\\'s Salt Series offers a collection of H-1 folders and fixed blades with a newly added keychain-sized Salt. The new Ladybug Salt is nearly as small as your car keys and carries just as easily. Its lightweight FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handle is coated with Bi-Directional Texturing for slip-resistant cutting. It comes in stand-out Marine Yellow and easy to spot if dropped in water or on the ground. The H-1 hollow ground blade is available with a plain or serrated edge. The LYL is clip-less with a lanyard hole to string a keychain or lanyard through. Whether light or heavy cutting, the Ladybug Salt is a compact firecracker with explosive cutting ability in a small package that will never rust.

Handle:62 mm

Blade:49 mm

Blade Steel:H-1

****Weight:****18g

I see so many nice Spyderco on r/EDC, shame the majority of them are illegal to own/import into Australia…

    • I did have a couple of assisted-opening folders confiscated by customs years ago. It's hard to understand why a little spring for a side-opening 3 inch knife makes it such a dangerous weapon.

      • +1

Like many of our firearms laws, they seem to be based on what looks scary in 80s action movies.

        • Something like my SOG Aegis that was confiscated doesn't even look scary. You can open these type of knives (which don't have assisted opening) just as quickly with just using the thumb stud. The spring just makes it more satisfying to open.

        • I guess they have to draw the line somewhere.

It's also, do you need an assisted opening knife? If you're opening a box, cutting fishing line, etc, is popping open the knife that much of an issue?

          • +3

@incipient: Most folders nowadays open just as fast as an assisted opening or automatic knife.

I have no interest in purchasing an auto or an assisted opening knife but I do wish they were legal in Australia.

            • +1

@jallen89: If I try really hard, I can sort of (grudgingly) see a situation where an OTF auto could be seen by someone as intimidating/dangerous. But a side opening/assisted opening small blade is really a big stretch.

          • +2

@incipient: some of the spyderco knives have a circular cut-out e.g spyderco police, means they can be opened one hand by using the thumb to push open ….one arrived for me from the USA, 2nd one was confiscated ….. but I can buy in stores in Australia at inflated prices …… go figure …..

            • @garage sale: Oh yeah, I'm not saying these are assisted.

            • @garage sale: Most of Spydies have a spydie hole as their own deployment method. It’s completely legal to import them in Australia.
Unfortunately ABF don’t know the legality as they should.

I’ve only had three knives out of literally 100s, that has been confiscated.
I appealed each instance and I got my knives back.

The majority of Spyderco models are legal to import into Australia.
Assisted opening and automatic folders, double edged knives are illegal to import but Spyderco only makes a few automatics.

I had no idea Spyderco made automatics and assisted openers. Pity we can't have fun things in Aus.

      Yikes, good find.

    or as a fidget toy

    Great, I'll get a couple for the kids… 🙄

I was going to give one to Scott Morrison now he doesn't know what to do with himself.

      • Maybe give it to Dan then, he has a few 'backs' he can use it on.

  • +1

Seems like a lot of money for such a little knife. I get that it's quality, but still.

  • +1

I find it curious why EDC discussions always include knives. It seems the complete opposite of what EDC is about i.e. everyday carry.

Most of the feedback about why someone includes a knife in their EDC is to open packages… I use a pair of scissors at home, and I carry a small multitool when I am out.

I don't want to carry more EDC stuff just to perform one dedicated task, when I can carry a multitool that can perform various tasks.

I have a feeling maybe EDC knives are just an American thing (some EDC YouTube channels even go into gun carries…).

    • +7

Because those forums/subreddits are filled with a bunch of midlevel IT helpdesk guys with Bear Grylls delusions.

You aren’t going to need that multitool and flint to start a survival fire on the 5.14pm train to Schofields, Brad.

    • because "just carry a phone" isn't much to discuss there

    • EDC, including knives is still a thing in Australia. Obviously nowhere near as popular since carrying a knife for edc is illegal. But there are plenty of Australian websites that sell pocket knives.
We also have several active Aussie edc Facebook groups.

      • +2

carrying a knife is not illegal, it is restricted and you must have a legitimate use for it. Many people do, and do carry one regularly.

        • Carrying a knife for “edc” reasons is illegal. If you’re carrying it for your job or hunting or fishing ect… then it’s legal.

          • @jallen89: edc being every day carry? I job my job everyday, so it is legal. If you fish every day, then your edc is legal.

            • @nmachine: Yes. Unfortunately I don’t fish. Maybe I should start :)

          • @jallen89: If I recall correctly, Queensland is the only state with a (limited) EDC allowance

a person may carry a pen knife or swiss army knife for use for its normal utility purpose.

            https://www.police.qld.gov.au/weapon-licensing/law-and-weapo…

            • +1

@OZKap: Woo hoo! I'm not breaking the law having a Swiss army knife on me.

            • +1

@OZKap: Yeah, QLD is the most lenient state in regards to knife rights.
              I’m in Victoria unfortunately.

    • It's definitely not an option in most (all?) states in Australia, unless you're a chef or something like that.

      • -2

and if you are someone who needs knives for your profession they have to be in a locked case, I thought.

        • Maybe you shouldn't think anymore, and actually learn the truth.

        • No it depends on how you're carrying it and whether there's a worthwhile reason. For example if you're carrying kitchen knives in a case made for chef knives and your reason is because you're going to work or cook in another location, reasonable. But out in the open at the train station holding it in a threatening causing public nuisance/concern then no.

EDC is the epitome of the Zombie-Apocalypse lusting nerds who would be the first people dead in any kind of major catastrophe.

Bloody awesome to see a Spyderco deal on Ozbargain. All I need now is a deal on a Spyderco Kapara :)
I miss my Kapara. I’ll definitely be getting another one.

    • +1

KnifeCenter have 30% off on it right now, https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP241CFP/spyderco-c241cfp-a…

Apparently it is delayed by the manufacturer though, so they are taking pre-orders.

      • +1

Thanks mate. But Spyderco MSRP is always higher than the street price. Plus I prefer buying my knives from Aussie distributors when possible :)

        • You could watch for a similar sale from Find Sports https://www.catch.com.au/product/spyderco-kapara-plain-blade…

          • +1

@johnwinds: Bloody hell the prices have gone up. My first Kapara was mid $300s as I recall. That was years ago before Covid.

            • @jallen89: Some sellers on Catch seem to always over-price their products. It's often a waiting game for the big discounts (especially the OnePass deals).

          • @johnwinds: Find Sports are the absolute pits. Don't go near them

            • @ebosh: I'm always very nervous about ordering anything from Catch which is not sold by Catch.

              • @johnwinds: I bought 2x scooters direct from Find late last year showing as in stock for immediate delivery. After 2 weeks with no response to multiple emails asking for an update I raised a Paypal dispute, which they didn't respond to, and I ultimately got a refund. It was the first and last time I bought something without checking the online reviews first.

I purchased a few knives from Shane. Very reliable and his price is always very competitive. Check it out if you guys are interested. I got my Spyderco Manbug from him. https://www.facebook.com/groups/846500369072572

    • Shane is the best. Fantastic prices and service.

    • Underground pricing. What's happening here?

      • Cutty is like fight club…

  • The Ganzo knife is 90% as good for 1/5 the price.

I’m buying my Paramilitary 2 this week! Copper scales too. Very excited.

    • Where are you getting it from? It's on my wish list.

      • Unfortunately, the cheapest seems to be on eBay. From an authorised seller though.

If you know of anywhere else though, please let me know.

        • +1

How much is it on eBay?

You could get these two from KnifeCenter in the US for $267.10 USD + shipping:
          https://www.knifecenter.com/item/SP81GP2/spyderco-paramilita…
          https://www.knifecenter.com/item/MTBPM2CUREP/metonboss-coppe…

          • +1

@johnwinds: The knife itself is $310 on eBay.

This seems to be cheaper! Thank you! Have you used this website before? Any issues you’d think I’d have getting this into Aus?

            • +1

@Pollywaffle: I've used them many times. They seem be the premier US site at the moment. Their shipping to Australia can get a bit expensive and watch out for not forgetting that all prices are in USD not AUD.

As long as the knife is not assisted opening/auto, double edged, karambit, has knuckle guards etc you should be fine. I think BladeForums has a list of knives that are allowed to be imported if you want to be sure.

              • +1

@johnwinds: Thanks so much! Their specials seem to have some nice CRKT knives I could also buy with the savings.
I’ll give you a shout if I need anything else. Again, thanks!

                • @Pollywaffle: Just be careful once you start getting their Custom knives Catalog, you could get seriously addicted and spend some big money!

    • +1

Nice! The compression lock is one of my favourite locks. The PM2 is larger than I prefer to carry, the Para 3 and Sage 5 is more my size.

      • +1

I was always going to get a Benchmade Bugout as I always thought the Spyderco looked like a dying pelican. However it’s just hit me this week that I really like the style of the Spyderco.
I work on a family farm so it’ll come in handy.

        • +1

I’ve had a Bugout. Great knife. Fantastic blade shape and thin behind the edge, great slicer.

Spyderco is the king of ergonomics. They’ve frequently said they design a knife with ergos and function as first priority and looks as second.

          • +1

@jallen89: Thanks man! Some of these prices are out of this world though. I didn’t think I’d be spending so much on a knife.

            • +1

@Pollywaffle: Haha that’s what I said 4 or 5 years ago when I first got into edc.
My first knife was $50. Within a year I purchased an $800 Shiro. Knife addiction is real lol.

            • @Pollywaffle: Now when I bought my first Busse, that was expensive!
