80 Classic Imported Beers for My Father's 80th Birthday - Where Should I Buy?

Hi all,

My dad's 80th is coming up and he's an avid beer drinker. Like me, he can't stand modern craft brews with fad styles (e.g. crazy sours) and instead enjoys more classic, historied beers from around the world.

My first thought was to go to beercartel and pick up 80 different imported beers - Mostly a mix of classic german, english, italian, and belgian beers (the bulk of which are various lagers including darker ones, pils, stouts, some ales - classic styles). Basically anything not local, US or SEA. However, they're out of stock of half the best picks, and while I know classic imported beers are expensive, the prices aren't what I'd call attractive.

I'm starting to think perhaps a split-buy might be in order, with the best Dan's can provide, and then the rest from a more specialty site? Cheers for any advice.

Edit: I've created a pastebin of the beers I've put in my Beercartel cart so far, to give an idea of what I'm after: https://pastebin.com/nrQH47w0 … Trying to keep the price per bottle under $10.

PS: I don't know how to tag, so if someone can shout out with how to tag this post with Alcohol (or any other suggested tags) - I'd be most appreciative.

  • With the markup you pay for singles I imagine this'll be crazy expensive! Does it have to be online or are there any bottle shops that specialise in beer where you live? If you're in Melbourne, Acland cellars in st kilda has a large range of imported beers, 600 of them if the sign outside is to be believed…

    • Unfortunately I'm only able to visit Sydney and Canberra for this one. Sydney would no doubt have some places …

The trouble is that it would be awkward to physically get 80 beers to him, as he's in Wollongong and I don't drive - So if it's anything more than say, 12 or so … I'd likely have to ship it anyway, which would be just as expensive I imagine.

Beer Cartel DOES have some 6 and 12 mixed packs in these classic styles, but half are marked out of stock (and aren't what I'd call extremely cheap anyway).

        Amatos, petersham Liquor, mr liquor.

  • First Choice liquor often has interesting ones that aren't available at Dan Murphy's. Why no USA beers though? You're missing some very good craft beer by ruling USA out, there's a lot more than the mega lager brands out there.

    • It's just not his drinking preference.

There's a few US beers I like (including some mega lager brand beers) but neither of us like modern craft beer. It's just aiming for very different styles and taste preferences to classic beers that have withstood the tests of time. Most are either bizarre 'throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks' attempts to stand out, crazy non-beer flavours like oyster stouts that taste more of oyster than beer or passionfruit sours that taste like warhead lollies …. Or one of ten trillion ales that just taste of nothing but overwhelming fruit esters (which for some strange reason my father thinks is best described as a 'strong taste of water', but I digress).

What can I say. We tend to like classic euro beers (very much including but not necessarily limited to lagers and related styles), and the Japanese and South Koreans and some others have done well in the last several decades in those styles as well.

  • I’m sure I saw a gift case of imported beers just recently on one of the websites regularly posted here, but I just checked Craftcartel, Boozebud, Smartcraft and BWS from my browsing history over the past week and no hits.

It was 16 or 24 mainly European beers for a reasonable price. Might have been a good starting point.n Maybe this reply will jog someone else’s memory of where it was.

This wasn’t what I saw, but this kind of thing:

I’d also say, if it was me, I’d be happier with 2 each of 40 beers, than 80 different. That way if one is really good you can give it another go.

      • I appreciate the sentiment, but 2x40 beers wouldn't be great here.

The idea is that he's tried almost every beer you can think of (especially the common imported beers you can get at basic grog shops like bws or Liquorland) so if I get 80 different ones, I'll bound to hit some he hasn't, or has forgotten about. If he likes any of them enough to want more, then I can always get him a case for father's Day or something.
