Recommend Anti Virus / Malware Software?

What would you recommend for a good anti virus / malware software for a PC and what has been your experience with it?

There are too many options like bitdefender, Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, AVG and many more.

I've only used the free version of AVG in the past but happy to pay something that is great. It would also be great if there was an ozbargain like promotion for it but that is optional.

Thanks for sharing!

  • cant go past bitdefender total security. it has saved me many times. It is also very low impact on cpu

  • Oh yeah I have recently had a few email from norton security (secure server or something like that) for refund etc.

Anyway there's a deal on antivirus on Ozbargain https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/713591

while on other hand if you need a protection from something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgKvOI9-_Vw , then you really should be using a Virtual machine not a antivirus

Malwarebytes Premium, is the one that I have been using for maybe 10 years, I have never had a problem.

    • Never had an issue using the free version.

I like malwarebytes but a bit of common sense with web security goes a long way when combined with most updated windows and windows defender

The built in Windows Defender, combined with a bit of common sense, is more than enough for the majority of people.

seconding windows defender, everything else will slow down your PC a bit.

i vaguely recall Kaspersky being the second best option a few years ago (better for security, but will slow down your PC, less slow down than AVG and the others), though a lot of people didn't recommend it bEcAuSe rUsSiAn (posting on their windows computers, as the USA is known to be a benevolent and non-spying nation :))

unless you are pirating a lot, you don't need anything other than windows defender. even if you are pirating, just use a bit of common sense and only download from trusted sources, using a trusted client.

  • I use AVG free and keep it up to date.

You also need to keep Windows up to date and also your apps up to date. To keep most of the apps up to date I use Sumo checker.

Linux and stop surfing dodgy pr0nk/torrent sites.

    • Linux is good, but browsing torrents isn't gonna give you a virus. That's film industry propaganda to scare you into paying.

      • Emphisis on Pegaxs' use of the word dodgy.

Yes Torrent have become more normalised and all the main torrent sites only list "safe" files, but when you're looking for more obscure titles and files, that's when all the dodgy sites start appearing in search results. They still try to get you through js injection from the website itself, or saying you need to install some "special" downloading program, or need some "special" program to unlock the "encrypted" file. There are many more ways, but you get the point.

If you have a genuine copy of Windows then there is literally zero point in paying money for any other antivirus software.

Windows Defender is not only free, but most tests show that it does better than other antivirus software at keeping your PC safe.

Also uses less resources compared to other bloated antiviruses.

    • Hate to burst your bubble, Genuine copy of windows and use windows defender always do deep scans, always install latest updates, found out the heard way when an account got hacked…… Installed Malwarebytes free trial…..Whalala picked up 3 trojansTrackers…

      • +1

        Whalala?

  • If you must use something other than Windows Defender, just get MalwareBytes and Avast/Avira.

Kaspersky for past 5 years usually 3 pc 2 year usually $16 no probs

don't want to be that person but a little online diligence goes a long way for your wallet and computer resources. ublock origin browser extension helps alot with that blatant virus stuff and if your insistent on paying for something i've heard good things about bitdefender.

  • malwarebytes, eset nod32 seem fine

This is a great site for getting AV subscriptions. https://www.saveonit.com.au/products/index/2330
The Kaspersky 3 device 2 year is pretty good value at $18.50. So ~ $3 per computer per year. Just adds an extra layer of protection incase of the unforseen. I haven't had any issues, but thats why we pay for insurance.

  • Definitely do not rely on just windows defender if you use your computer a lot… Big Plus for Malwarebytes after picked up 3 Trojans/Trackers that Windows defender didn't..

  • Cruelsister's Comodo config, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vktNQCwB2UY.

Check out her posts on https://malwaretips.com/ and https://www.wilderssecurity.com/. I learnt so much from Meghan watching her videos. Nowadays, I use Kubuntu on my laptop, and just WD on the media Win10 PC's. If I ever went back to Win10 for my main machine I would use Comodo, and if I needed some speed I would disable WD.
