Do you mean Chromagen/Midea instead of "Midas"? https://www.bunnings.com.au/chromagen-170l-midea-electric-he…

A few times over the past couple of years, Chromagen directly have had some good supply and install offers which they advertise on Facebook. I recall the 170L unit being supplied and installed by Chromagen for around $1200 and the larger unit for $1750. Have a look at their promo website as it would be worth putting in an enquiry about their current offer https://www.smarterhotwater.com.au/

In terms of Chromagen/Midea - just a heads up, when they first started selling Heat Pump Hot Water Systems, there were many failures within 2-3 years but parts only had a 1 year warranty (tank may have been a bit longer). In early 2020, they upgraded their warranty to what it is now but there's still only a 3 year warranty on the compressor. The tank/unit still looks the same but it's possible they may have improved internal components. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0611/1513/8302/files/Chrom…

My first heat pump was a Rheem MPI-325L model which lasted 11 years with no maintenance either (in terms of changing the anode). The tank wasn't leaking but the unit stopped heating fully (water was luke-warm). The plumber suspected it was the circulation pump but because it was old, I decided to just put in a new system so I got a 250L Enviroheat for $2490 (supplied and installed). The price was reasonable at the time (July 2020) but now they've gone up (the plumber I used now charges $2990). https://www.enviroheatpump.com.au/ 5 year warranty on the tank and compressor.

  • “Install a rheem”

    • Haha no way - plenty of better options for heat pumps. Whilst I got 11 years out of my MPI-325L Rheem, many people have gotten much less out of their Rheem Heat Pumps. Product Review is littered with many unhappy owners.

  • I've been looking at either an iStore or Evoheat.

Just be mindful that both incentivise reviews - usually offering additional warranty if you post a review shortly after you install it. The issue is that this then biases overall ratings as you have a huge amount of 5 star reviews from people who literally just installed it.

I recommend checking out the various heat pump HWS on https://www.productreview.com.au/
In my opinion many are not worth the money, especially if you have solar installed.
When our heat pump HWS expired, we replaced with a standard HWS. As well the water is heated during the day by the solar panels. A timer is also on the circuit so no night heating.

    • Intrigued! And is the water still hot in the early morning? What are your hws specs and showering habits?

  • Pity you aren't in Vic - they give you and install heat pump HWS for free*

    *Conditions apply

    • If you have enough roof space, getting solar is a better deal.

      • Roof solar install rebates are means tested and have out of pocket. These are free if you have an existing electric storage HWS.

  • We've been on a Sanden for the last few years, along with 4 other neighbours.

  • So better ignore gov rebate and paid for a better one ? Should get normal electricity one or still heat pump ?

  • I currently install the Istore units here in Brisbane, I have the 270L unit at home and have no issues in recommending the product. You will find most heat pumps across the board only offer a 5 year warranty.

    • I'm on control load 1 , only heat water from 10pm for 6 hours. Will it still ok ? Are you on control load 1 too?

    • I check istore after you recommended, it seem really good and with good rating . All others heat pump after gov rebate only cost 33 dollars. I tried istore and after rebate is 1700 include GST. End up I still try istore.

You wont get a decent heat pump for $33, you will get a Midea….good luck with that. I charge about $3000 for the 180L and about $3300 for the 270L. This includes signing the rebates over to me.

    • So bad , istore refer the installation to a plumbing company , they said tmr when they come install as I'm on off peak so they can't test it , they will disconnect and connect and leave …

      • Unsure how the off peak tarriffs work where you live but I'd just caution you on putting a heat pump on any off peak tarriff. There's an off peak tarriff in the Energex (Brisbane/SE QLD) distribution area that runs for at least 18 hours a day but is generally non operational at 6am-9am each day. With you/member's of your family going off to work/school at that time, combined with most heat pumps generally having a smallish tank (250L-270L), be prepared for the possibility you may run out of hot water, during the morning showers, if you have a few members of the family or someone that likes longer showers.

Also if you've got solar or planning to get solar and you're getting a large system, there's no real point to keeping it on off peak as any excess solar can simply be used for the Heat Pump to run, during the day and afternoon.

    • I'm in Brisbane too - what do you charge for the supply and install of an Istore 270L? Assuming retain the existing copper pipework but install all new valves (including non-return isolation valve which is often missed)? Also assume you're arranging the electrical side too.
