Apple iPad Air Warranty

Hi

I purchased apple iPad Air from a eBay seller nextgenent.

Seller mentioned it is an Australian stock but seller also mentioned that he provides 12 months manufacturer warranty.

Im little bit confused here. AUS Stock May be something which can be posted from Australia (but grey import). Seller did not reply when I asked whether it is a grey import. Will Apple provide service for products purchased from someone other than apple authorised resellers? How can I check whether iPad is under apple Australia’s eligible list for service/AppleCare.

Thanks in advance

  • You can check your warranty coverage by entering serial number here: https://checkcoverage.apple.com

Apple does offer international warranty so will repair their products no matter where you buy it provided your warranty is active. However, while Aus stock might get on the spot replacements, international products will get repair option only, no direct replacement.

Worth nothing AppleCare+ is not international coverage, only standard manufacturer's warranty (usually 1 year).

AppleCare+ is international. It’s normally 2 years not 1. AppleCare+ needs to be purchased additionally, and you can normally get a replacement uni instead of repair.

      • Looks like you're correct. I remember being told years ago some element of my UK AppleCare+ not being covered here but that may have changed since.

Hello again! I hope you had no problems using your Ultimate gift cards at The Good Guys.

The only guaranteed way you can get information on when and where your iPad was originally sold (and consequently whether it is eligible for Australian Consumer Law coverage) is to contact Apple, as they can see in their systems all this information. However, if you don't want to (or cannot) do that, you can generally tell whether an iPad or iPhone was originally manufactured to be sold in Australia by looking at the model number, plus you can get a good estimate of when an iPad or iPhone was manufactured by looking at the serial number.

The model number for an iPad Air (5th Gen) 64GB Wi-Fi Space Grey originally manufactured for the Australian or New Zealand market and to be sold new at retailers is MM9C3X/A.

    • The first alphanumeric character (in this case, M) denotes that the device was intended to be sold new at retailers. Other alphanumeric characters used in this part of the model number include F (usually used for refurbished devices sold on the Apple Online Store), N (usually used for replacement devices supplied by Apple for AppleCare+/warranty/ACL or out-of-warranty replacements) and 3 (used for demonstration devices).

    • The X in the model number denotes an iPad that was manufactured for the Australian or New Zealand market. Apple uses a lot of other alphanumeric characters for other regions for iPads and iPhones.1

However, please note what I said does not always apply for replacement devices. For example:

    • I once received a replacement iPad from an Apple Store where the first alphanumeric character in the model number was actually M. However, my last replacement iPad from Apple has a model number starting with N.

    • All replacement iPads I have received from Apple have a B as the alphanumeric character denoting the region.

Additionally, the year and week an iPad or iPhone was originally manufactured is encoded in the serial number, which can give a hint as to when the device may have been originally sold. There are websites dedicated to calculating the manufacture date of Apple devices, including this one. Obviously, if a particular iPad was manufactured a year before it was sold to the original customer, the serial number alone will not tell you this. However, I find that (slightly sketchy?) third-party websites (e.g. https://iunlocker.com/check_imei.php) can be good at pinpointing a likely original sale date.

    1. Random fact: if anyone has an iPhone where they cannot turn off the shutter sound on the camera no matter what they do, it is most likely due to the iPhone originally being manufactured for sale in Japan. The model number for an iPhone produced for the Japanese market will use J as the region code.

The model number in the listing is MM9C3X/A which would indicate that it is indeed the Aus/NZ model.
I find 3utools to be quite a useful program to verify most things about an Apple product.

Thanks again for all of your inputs. I will follow your suggestions before opening the product. So that I can return it if it is an overseas product.

@ WookieMonster, yes I purchased Goodguys gift cards and used them online. Actually, I added ultimate gift cards to my apple wallet and paid in store as if I’m paying for a virtual card. So, staff member didn’t realise that I was paying using ultimate gift cards.

That’s clever, does it come up as one credit even though you’ve added multiple cards? I’ve never considered doing this but it sounds like a good way to do it.

      • I purchased $100 and $200 giftcards (paid as 2 x$100 transactions). Finally, I purchased $379 product for $292.15 (A$35 woolworths credit + 15% recent store discount). But it was a great suggestion made by @WookieMonster.

  • If the tax invoice is with ABN (Either Ebay aus or the seller) then you will be covered by Australian consumer guarantee.
