What Graphics Card Do I Need?

Hi All

I believe my graphics card has gone kaput but i have no idea which one to get.

Everywhere says "look in your system properties etc" to find the graphics card details.

That's all well and friggen good if you have the ability to look at it!

The card is below, is a nvidia p1062, which has no info online about it.

So what should I be looking for and how much should I be paying? Aftermarket is fine and I'm not a gamer.

cheers

10+yo GPU, are you sure you wanna replace it or is now the best time to just update the whole PC?

    • ah ok so i was looking at the wrong number, thanks for pointing that out.

its a PC that is nor used for anything important, possibly not worth upgrading the whole thing unless a card is expensive

      • unless a card is expensive

It's more that you'd be having to look at used ones, which may have limited lifespan, as well as the other components in the system ageing.

But here's the eBay search for GPU's which should be compatible:

If we knew your CPU and Ram, we could best determine the best value GPU

Do you actually need a graphics card?

Some computers have integrated graphics: you can pull out the video card from the system, then attach the monitor's cables to the back of your motherboard and see if continues to work.

    • I had a look and there are 2 DVI inputs with plates over them saying "do not remove". I assume these are the integrated ports?

      • All motherboards have Video output ports yes, but I can't tell you if it'll work as we don't know the rest of your systems specs. you'll have do testing yourself.

        • Thanks I tried them both, one still got the input signal not found error. cables are fine as i can duplicate my laptop to the screen, video error on motherboard input and card is concerning.

@Richmond Tigers: If you still need one you could probably throw up a Wanted listing in the classifieds and see if anyone has an old GPU to sell. Most likely someone will have a spare they don't need and you could just pay shipping for it.

Otherwise, I can spot this Radeon R5 340x for $35.95. This card came out in 2015 (7 years ago) and AMD driver support is in Legacy mode but it'll still work in a modern system. You can go even older and grab the R5 240, which released in 2013.

            • @scrimshaw: Cheers, i think the issue may be larger though now ive opened it up again and listened to it. when it switches on the fan runs but nothing else seems like its firing up, or that the HD is being read. Might have to get the HD out and try extract what I need off it.

@Richmond Tigers: That could be one of many problems, power (even though it lights up it might not be getting enough through), memory, harddrive, motherboard or CPU. Memory you can test by switching the sticks around (if there's more than one), CPU is unlikely to be the issue but sometimes you can test just by taking it out, motherboards are incredibly hard to diagnose.

For a ~12 year old machine it might be time to bite the bullet and buy a used dell/lenovo desktop for $100-200 or find a cheap system on gumtree/facebook. But it might be worth hunting around a thrift store or even a local recyclers to see if they have something you can have for free. My local recycler lets me grab stuff if I ask nicely enough because most of it is just going to be melted down somewhere.

edit: To answer your question though, any GPU made in the past 15 years would work and you should pay as little as possible. Even try a wtb on gumtree/facebook to see if someone is giving one away. But it sounds like that's probably not your issue.

          • @Richmond Tigers: What is your CPU ?

    RTX 3090

  • Instead of getting a new really old video card, put that money towards a new $500 prebuilt, that will serve you alot better.

    • Nah it'd be better just to chuck a $60 SSD in the old computer. That alone will make it feel 5 years newer.

Unless you're using cutting edge AutoCAD or rendering software, you don't really need a new model necessarily.

  • Hehe, that's really old :/

Just buy a new PC, even the cheap Dell Refurbs will be much better !
