Do Popcorn Kernels Expire?

Just wondering if it's safe to make popcorn with kernels that have passed their best before date by a few months? They've been stored in their original plastic packaging and pegged shut after they were opened. How would I tell if they're too old to use or if they've gone stale?

it's safe. give them a go and taste them, if they taste funny, just chuck them out, if they taste fine, eat them.

It's okay so long as they don't smell off or have any thing growing on them.

You will find that they will not all pop. You may get as low as 70% to 80% popping depending on how many months they are over their best before date and how you have stores them as they absorb moisture and this will cause popping issues.

With some of the forum topics here how do your kernels even get a chance to approach expiry?

    My head says No.

My heart says Maybe. (but could be Arrhythmia)

My wallet says go long on Popcorn Futures… lol

It would not occur to me there could be any safety issue. What could possibly go wrong? I wouldn't hesitate.
But I suppose someone will say they did this when the kernels were covered in a green mould after being stored in a puddle outside a veterinary outhouse and got a tummy ache.
You have to use a little common sense too!

Didn't the pharoh of egypt stockpile grain for like 7 years?

I think your corn kernals will be fine for a few months

    • I figure the grain stockpiled from the pharaoh of egypt might be past best by date.

      Could by worth something though…

  • I was expecting you to be asking about decades old kernels. Anyway, no they'll be fine. Older ones may dry out more (at least that's my understanding) and then not pop as well but I wouldn't hesitate to use years old kernels as long as they don't have anything growing on them on.

  • I just checked and I have some that expired in march 2020. Now I’m tempted…

  • The main thing that can go off is the butter or oil mixed in with the kernels. If it tastes off, it is probably off. If they come with oil I probably would use them if they're under about a year after the best before.

If they don't come with oil then the main issue will be that they dry out and lose the ability to pop.

  • Next time put them in an empty jar like I do, they last for yonks

  • Best before dates are more of a guideline… 'use by' dates are more strict

    • Unless your a pensioner like me
If it is frozen, it should last longer. I get frozen stuff at hamper day which is all out of date
I will extend the date as I bought a vacuum sealer, less air in the bag, less chance to go off
I will seal everything. Take everything out of the freezer & re-seal it.
As I am a pensioner, that won't take long (I know the job sucks :p)

      • Some things don't expire though. Corn kernels, pasta, white rice. Dried beans last years and have a lot of nutrition.

I know what you find in the pantry, don't rely too much on short dated processed food.
