Outdoor Wi-Fi AP Thoughts & Recommendations

Hi all,

Long story short and my scenario:

  • I live in Regional VIC on a 1200sqm block.
  • External Garage to the house.
  • Require extended WiFi Coverage outside (mainly garage plus some of the backyard)
  • Network Connectivity already provided by a Ubiquiti Nanostation setup to the garage.
  • No requirement for the house, as this is already covered
  • Colourbond Roof
  • Brick House & Garage Exterior

When I first moved into the property, I had a D-Link mounted under the Garage eves which worked pretty good. Well, that died (it was about 6 years old). I replaced that with a TP-Link….. well I have found that it has also died over the weekend, looking at the circuit board looks like either a component has gone bad or moisture has gotten in (not surprised).

So, I am looking for something that is "Outdoor" rated that can provide 5GHZ WiFi. I have 2.4GHZ covered separately for WiFi Power Adaptors, but they are all internal to the house + garage, so I don't need 2.4GHZ outside.

Ideally, I would love a Ubiquiti Unifi Mesh AC Indoor/Outdoor Wi-Fi Access Point but it looks like pretty much everywhere is out of stock. Plus I want to use about $130 in Amazon vouchers (I am happy to put some additional funds towards the purchase)

Now I found a WAVLINK Weatherproof AC1200 Outdoor but found mixed reviews

I found two TP-Link models that look good:

Does anyone else have any recommendations? I would love a Ubiquiti device since I am already running two of them and I plan to upgrade the rest of my Network to the Ubiquiti range.

  • The UniFi 6 LR is IP54, have you considered that under an eave?

4 = Protected against water splashed from all directions, limited ingress permitted.

    • Probably a bit more than I was looking to spend.
