My First Post here. please be gentle ;)

    • +31

its okay.. just let it happen.

    • +4

I'm very sorry but, you will probably only get 1-2 year support with Motorola at most. Also apparently it has a bug with over processing photos, same bug as the Edge 20.

      • +2

Note that 1-2 years likely only includes security/bug updates, not version upgrades. Still salty about my previous Moto being promised 2 version upgrades and never getting the first one.

      • +1

If there's a Gcam port for the device, you should try that.

  • +7

I really liked my Edge 20 but Moto are so slow on updates. It still hasn't received Android 12 while my 6a is now in 13.

    • +4

I have the Edge 20 and have had Android 12 since at least March

      • I have the edge 20 fusion and still on Android 11

      • My mistake. Edge 20 Fusion.

      • +1

How do they even remain relevant if they can't even get necessary updates out? I had the same issues with huawei a few years back.

        • +4

          Cheap phone with decent spec.

        • +11

Because honestly 95% of phone users don't care about updates.

Ask the average person if they even know what version OS they're using, or if they've received the latest security patch. I guarantee they wouldn't have a clue.

If anything I've known more people complain about getting updates than not getting them.

          • @johnn: My big brother was looking job hi-fi catalogue just a while ago and complain same thing that there are too much update. I had to tell him that it was necessary to update system for bugs and security patches.

          • @johnn: Yes agree, someone complained to me they were getting hacked, then I suggested fixing it with firmware update, kindly don't know what that is. Tried to explain, changed the conversation. Goodbye friend, why drive a car teach kids to use it and constantly crash your car.

          • @johnn: Damn good point. Very true

    • +5

Agree. Cant compare any other mobile with Pixel. Pixel always gets the first updates.
Motorola hardware is much better. Camera is very average. But a fan of their chop chop flashlight

      • +4

I'm stuck with Motorola for life until another company incorporates chop chop flashlight!

      • Moto used to have Android One program for some models but haven't seen that in a while.

Problem with some updates is that they are country release specific …. Fusion 20 is on Android 12 in Europe , Australia has to wait unless you get a VPN.

      • I loved 'chop chop light' when I had my Moto G6 Plus. Miss that feature the most since moving to a Poco.

      • To be honest, I don't think it is a fair comparison either. Google have monopoly control over android (as they own it and develop it) so I wouldn't be surprised if other phone manufacturers don't get the same access to the OS, so basically they can never be as up-to-date as the latest Pixel.

        • +1

Android has benefits in that the OEM can make changes to customise it to suit their hardware or add features that are exclusive to their hardware that Google doesn’t offer in their version. In someways Google have been adding new features to the newer Android versions that have been features in other Android oems versions of Android for years and some features they’ll never add. It seems Google is always copying Samsung one ui features for instance for their newer Android releases. However I personally couldn’t careless about having the latest Android versions straight away, as long as the oem is committed in bringing the newest version in their unique flavour asap and they support hardware for a decent timespan. What is decent I think is at least 5 years at this point. I figured at this point also Samsung are the gold standard in the Android world, since Samsung support for longer than most, including on their lower tier A series models. Google are typically 2nd and other oems vary from worse to significantly so. Motorola is known for lacking in their software support on their phones, but then that costs money and people who don’t care about updates would rather save money and don’t value the importance of it. The downside can cost money too, in that you’ll need to replace hardware sooner in order for all your applications to continue to run and so on. I guess if you buy a new cheaper model every couple of years than the issue isn’t so much a problem. But I’m at the point where I’m keeping my phone for numerous years as the newer models offer less and less but cost considerably more.

    • I have this phone and it got Android 12 quite a few months ago.

      • I wonder if it will get android 13 and above or end at 13?

      • How is the battery life?

        • Pretty average. I'm a heavy phone user so I get it down to about 40% by the afternoon. 30W charging however so I top it up fairly quickly.

Only real complaint is mediocre cameras and the touch screen can be iffy sometimes.

    • +3

To be fair, android 13 has onky just been released and it's only Google devices that have it.

      • It still hasn't received Android 12

        • +1

You're completely wrong. It got the update 6 month ago. The Edge 20 Fusion however only started getting Android 12 from June 2022.

          • @Clear: Ok? It was a quote and I'm sure many are confused by Lenovo's naming scheme.
            I have an S22.

            • @Techie4066: You didn't read further below from the comment you quoted.

              • -5

@Clear: And I think CachePC didn't comprehend the original comment properly as their problem wasn't that A13 hadn't been pushed, rather not even A12 had.
As I said, the naming scheme isn't memorable for most. And quite clearly some of those variants haven't received A12 which isn't good enough.
My last phone was a standard Moto G8 which only received a single update. Trash.

    • +1

Be thankful. Android 12 is not that great, at least, on my Edge 20.
Seriously contemplating rolling back to 11.

      • +1

        What's bad?

      • Personally, I needed DualSense compatibility, no Android 11 was a no go.

  • +2

The Motorola x30 pro looks interesting. Hopefully it comes to Australia

My boy loves his Edge 20 Fusion, last time when they on sale for half price for just $249, really cant complain for that massive 6.7" screen, as long as you don't care about taking photos. Hope next round of sale this Edge 30 will go half price too, then will be time to change mine!

    • +1

Motorola edge 20 Fusion is a good one. I currently have Moto G9 Plus which is 6.7 inch as well. I like the screen size to watch videos/Youtube. It gets annoying when I need to mount the phone to use for GPS. Smaller size phone may be better for using GPS. Lets see if we get the Edge 30 in half price. That would be an awesome deal.

    • +2

Bought one when it was $249. Then I used my $40 jbhifi voucher from Norton antivirus promo.

$209 moto edge 20 fusion. For what it is. It's a good phone.

    • +2

The camera sensor on the Edge 20 actually isn't bad - I took a still shot of a moderately challenging scene and it held its own against a Pixel 6.

However Moto's camera software is not great - it never seems to ramp up the ISO even in low light conditions, which sucks because a noisy image is better than no image at all. The end result is that unless you are outdoors under reasonably bright lightning, it is very difficult to take clean shots. Even a little bit of movement and/or camera shake will result in an unusable smear.

It's super disappointing consdering that this is the same sensor that was in Samsung flagship phones not that long ago. Really does show how much the software matters too though!

      • "Even a little bit of movement and/or camera shake will result in an unusable smear" the OIS doesn't prevent that?

        • The Edge 20 Fusion doesn't - only has EIS, and even then that's only for video.

I see the Edge 30 has OIS and a different sensor so it might perform better, though if the Moto software doesn't ramp ISO then it'll still struggle with movement.

      • +1

I have Moto G 5G Plus (slightly old phone) and I use night mode when I know there wont be enough light. Love it!

    • +1

No way Edge 30 will go down to $250. It's an upper mid-range.

    • I got the $249 deal as a 2nd phone …. great unit, would love android 12 but I can wait.

  • I have this phone and I really like it.
It's just virtually impossible to find a simple silicon case.

  • -1

I find Oppo OS is more stable than Moto OS, although they are all based on A12.

In addition, Oppo has better camera in real life.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/oppo-reno8-lite-5g-128gb-…

    • Please explain why you think the Reno8 lite has a better camera in real life?
GSMarena don't list the Reno's sensor or pixel size (µm) plus it doesn't have OIS or an ultrawide lens. There is no photo comparison on GSMarena either.

  • +1

Good price for a solid all-round phone. No real complaints with the other than the slightly below average battery capacity, lack of an SD card slot and headphone jack; although those features are becoming rarer and rarer.

  • +1

155g is a very light phone. If I hadn't already bought the Xiaomi Lite 11 5G NE I would have considered this.

    • +1

Just realised its lighter than the Pixel phones and 70g lesser than my current phone. I have been carrying dumbbells with me all around ;)

  • +1

    4000mah battery, hard pass.

    • +1

That's the cost of 6.8mm thinness

      • +3

        Not worth the compromise

  • Does Motorola/this phone have it's own OS layer? What's the best $500 phone that doesn't have it's own OS customisations, has NFC, USB-C. I'm not interested in the camera.

    • +1

Motorola and Nokia would be good choice. Others have bloatware on top

      • +1

Can't believe the amount of crap that came pre-installed on me S21 FE

  • +3

Wouldn't the recent Samsung A73 deal for about $7 more be a much better deal?

Much better longevity with software updates.

  • Anyone knows how long this deal will go?

  • I bought this yesterday, with 5% off vouchers through NIB. I was happy with my Pixel 5 but it had a cracked screen. I thought this phone would be comparable but it's so much better. Even the few Motorola customisations it has are actually useful and it's much more responsive.
