Advice on How to Choose an Electricity Supplier Please [QLD, Brisbane]

Moving into a new place in Sept, I haven't had to get electricity account in almost decade, everywhere else it was pre-existing and I just rolled with it.

Dunno what to do… Hoping OzB chorus a nice simple answer like "Company X is definitely the cheapest", but I assume there's a nice website that will explain it all to me.

We won't have any solar panel, got gas stoves, not actually sure about the hot water… probs should have sussed that out but… :shrugs:

Thanks folks 😊

  • Is there a government based comparison site?

Unfortunately there is no one company that is always the cheapest - several factors affect the amount you pay.

Do you have an estimated usage (in kWh)? This allows you to make meaningful calculations/comparison, rather than just trying to find one with the cheapest rate (but likely high daily supply charge).

        • Damn.. I guess we'll just pick one, measure usage for a week and then switch…

          • @jonathonsunshine: Don't think you can do weekly billing? Monthly may be more like it.

Just get something with a nice sign-up bonus, check the rates aren't far off the average and you should be fine.

  • Download the usage from your old residence and load it into the comparison site.

If comparison site doesn't do it then use Excel to work out average usage for peak / off peak and plug in the rates from comparison site.

    • I have no idea, that was a different house with four people and two of them ran computer 24/7. I just handed over cash.
