  • This or 970 EVO plus for gaming PC only drive?

    • Just got a dying 970 EVO plus, trying my best to clone it :(

      • I have 2 NVMe in my machine, gen4 and gen3. loading times difference isn't dramatic

        • +1

This is 980 (non-Pro) so still PCIe gen 3.

          • @netsurfer: and that's exactly what I have. the other one is some NVMe gen4 OEM Samsung

bought 1tb 980 exactly one year ago for $145 on one of eBay sales

        • because effectivly there is none

Gamersnexus ran a crucial mx500 and a evo 980 and the load times are less than 1 sec difference

      • +2

Try to clone it and then RMA it. I wonder whether Samsung warranty department still does what they did (gives you a better model and 2X the storage of your faulty SSD). Hope you get a 980 Pro through Samsung RMA department.

        • +1

Cloning with Acronis True Image but very slow, it said time left 10 hours.

I wonder whether Samsung warranty department still does what they did

Will go back to my supplier, the reason why I know it is dying because ASUS M/B BIOS said "Please backup your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may e imminent and cause unpredictable fall."

        • gives you a better model and 2X the storage of your faulty SSD

That doesn't sound normal at all — when did this happen?

I've heard of that happening on occasion, namely when the exact model isn't available to them (because downgrading would be a horrible move) - but as a standard practice? 🤔

          • +1

@eepykate: Another OZBer had the same experience. Though for him, it was a bit odd, he had a faulty mSATA SSD and received m.2 NVMe SSD. So, yes, could be due to obsolete models.

I do hope he gets 980 Pro instead. If his 970 EVO plus was the older batch, that's a more expensive batch with better NAND. The new batch has a newer controller, but the actual NAND chips aren't as good.

            • @netsurfer: Interesting. What model did you have to return?

              • +1

@eepykate: Samsung 840 250GB. Samsung gave me a brand new 500GB 850 EVO instead. I think 840 EVO was still available at the time.

    • 970 evo plus is good I have it but it does tend to get hotter than the new d-ramless nvme. Personaly I'd go for 980 but if you dgaf about lifetime and just want speed that 970 evo plus

  • -5

    HODL. Next gen SSDs coming.

  • +1

Is this better than 970 evo plus?

    • +6

This spreadsheet of SSDs has 970 Evo Plus as a mid-tier and the 980 as a entry-level

      • +1

Thanks for the list link. Although if 980 is entry level nvme they need to have a not-even-entry-level or office only tier for crucial P2, Kingston NV1, WD green, etc.

    • 980 not 980 pro lol. I got excited for a second, too.

Elpis based 970 Evo Plus FTW.

    • +2

      No. 980 is not better

    • +3

The current batch of 970 Evo Plus uses the same controller as 980 (Elpis) so 970 Evo Plus is now better in pretty much most aspects.

The older batch of 970 Evo Plus used an older controller, however, it had better NAND flash so had good sustained write speed. New batch has more aggressive SLC cache to compensate for inferior sustained write. Good to see 980 (non-Pro) finally dropped price to a more reasonable level.

    • +1

970 evo plus is a bit faster and has DRAM, but the 980 uses less power and runs cooler.

In a laptop I took the slight performance hit of the 980 over the 970 evo plus for the benefits of power consumption. Both drives are considerably faster than the OEM Samsung drive they replaced.

In a desktop, of course, heat and power consumption are not really a concern.

The 1Tb 980 Pro is sti available and worth considering for a 20ish more…

    nope

  • Crucial 1TB NVMe is cheaper at $110. Is there much difference between the two? Local AU store as well.

    Crucial CT1000P2SSD8 P2 1000GB 3D NAND NVMe PCIe M.2 Internal SSD, 1 TB https://amzn.asia/d/ef1JPIA

    • Check the TPU review, P2 fares much worse.

  • -1

    The drive is pretty good

  • Should have a big sign in the description stating that this is not for use with the PS5.

    Now $129!!
