GST on AliExpress Order

Order something on AliExpress today. The GST was calculated on the before discount price.

When I contact AliExpress, I received the following reply.
'Please be advised that the VAT is calculated based on the original amount of the order and not after the discount has been applied.'

Are VAT and GST the same?

    VAT stands for Value Added Tax and it is a consumption tax applied to the purchase price of goods and services. GST stands for Goods and Services Tax and it is a consumption tax that is imposed upon the cost of goods and services. Both GST and VAT are taxes that share the same characteristics but have different names.

    VAT is what some countries like the UK call GST.

    It should be calculated on the paid price, not the original one.

      I got the same response as you. They basically said it's the sellers fault but the tax is charged by Ali.
